President Tommy had a memory lapse and forgot all about Minard Duncan who had the dubious assignment of introducing our guests.  Tom thought he would get off easy telling Winston to fine him $15 for the mistake only to be booed off the stage.  So Minard did a great job with introductions;

Visiting Rotarians from Fullerton Sunrise was Bill Jindra, Owen Dean and Donald Bell. (continued . . .)

Visitor & Guest Introductions . . . continued

Allyn Lean Brought Bob Renfrow with the Fullerton Kiwanis and offered up a wonderful parting gift, a golf towel from the Ernie Chapman Gold Tournament which raised $22,500.

Bill Peloquin got to spend the day and lunch with his lovely wife, Wilma.

Ray Ashcroft also had the good fortune to have his lovely wife Mary join us for lunch too.

Drew Napolin’s guest was Jerry Schoenfeld.

Minard Duncan brought Mitch Hovey

Ray Hansen’s guest who sat with Carl Camp was Jenny Stewart.

Let the program begin…………….

With Jim Williams presiding over a panel made up of the Mighty Jim Young, Jim Vanderburg and Bob Savage they discussed membership development.  Jim Williams began the discussion with his comments that membership development is the lifeblood of the club.  He continued asking probing questions admitting that the world as we know it is changing, however, “Service Above Self” is a constant and that Rotary continues to bring us together for that purpose for over 100 years.

Jim Young had the opportunity to remind us about the “Culture” of Rotary. He reminded us of the historic role of diversity in Rotary’s roots.  Fellowship and having a good time were the main reasons the original members got together in the first place.  There was plenty of diversity in the original four members not only in their professional but in their religions too.

Jim Vanderburg was charged with Rotary perspectives.  Jim first joined the Brea Rotary in the early 1960’s while trying to drum up business in a venture he and his wife started with low capitalization, a dream and sleepy competitors who were giving him a slim, at best, chance of success.  In his words he became a Rotarian when he realized the true meaning of “Service Above Self”.  When asked about what qualities were needed from a prospective member he gave a simple one word answer, friend.

Last but certainly not lease was Bob Savage who was entrusted with Classification procedures, by-laws and constitution.  He spent much time on target classifications and how many of each profession are allowed as we can’t get too heavy in one field.  While we have plenty of real estate people in our club we need more trades people, for example,  Contractors, plumbers, builders, etc.  Bob also reminded us that membership continues to be by invitation only and the discretion of the Rotary Club.

Back to Jim Williams and the assignment of homework.

  • Take some time in the next week to think about who would make a good Rotarian.
  • You may want to target a prospective member individually or as a team.
  • They could be someone who may prefer membership in one of our sister clubs in Fullerton.  Sharing Rotary is bigger than just our club.
  • Make a brief personal action plan to contact a prospective Rotarian and invite them as a guest within the next three weeks.
  • Remember, the future of Rotary is in your hands.

The microphone was then passed back to President Tommy who made comment on what a great job our fellow Rotarians did and ended with the following quote from Yogi Berra.

“As parents, you’ll want to give your children all the things you didn’t have. But don’t buy them an encyclopedia, make them walk to school like you did.  Teach them to have respect for others, especially the police.  They are not here to create disorder, they are here to preserve it.
