Volume 67, Issue 8   Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

Rob Jahncke gave a brief history of the Pledge of Allegiance before leading the club in the pledge.  Howard Wood was surprised when the club voluntarily sang both verses of his Labor Day song selection, ”I’ve been working on the Railroad”, followed, of course by “Smile” (Don Ludwig, just back from music-camp ably accompanied on Piano).

Pastor Greg Hickman gave the invocation today.

Dan Kiernan introduced visiting Rotarian Charlotte Knapp from Yorba Linda Sunrise.  Rotarians with guests included Ray Hansen (Paul McGinty); Jim Young (Dr. Irene Lang, CSUF); Diane Jones (Lee Birchfield);  Minard Duncan (Mitch Hovey) and  Griff Duncan (Vicki Schindele and Richard Kinsey).

Announcements:  Prez Tom announced that Fullerton Rotarian Lonnie Blake’s wife Bella passed away this week from cancer.

Dan Kiernan reminded us that the Boys and Girls Club Auction is Sept. 21st and that there is still an opportunity to donate auction items and buy raffle tickets.

Ed Atkinson announced the first annual Sunny Hills High School Cross County Invitational at Craig Park on Sat. Sept. 22nd from 9 to 2.  Ed is looking for volunteers to cook hot dogs and hamburgers.  (Randy McFarland wants to sign-up for the 2-mile event and re-gain his title)

Terri Grassi (remember her?) announced that the Fullerton Rotary Club will celebrate its 85th anniversary on its Wed. Oct. 24th meeting and is organizing a club photograph to be taken after the meeting on the grounds of Hope International.  Plan to stay after this meeting for half-hour or so and be part of the commemorative photo.

Upcoming Events & Programs:
9/11 BOD Meeting at Fullerton Community Bank
9/12 Inside Story on Angel's & Doger's Scoring - Ed Munson, Official Scorer for Angels & Dogers (and Chuck Munson's brother.)

Recognition:

Bob Hillhouse assumed recognition master duties today.

Carl Camp was recognized for his Dad's 84th Anniversary. He was fined $100 for misleading the club.  He and Judy were married in 1984.

Dan Ouweleen’s wife Eileen celebrated a birthday this week.  Debby Koff’s husband Lou celebrates a birthday this week. Dan Fisk celebrated the big Six-O (60) recently.  Past President and PDG Bill Peloquin celebrates an Anniversary with Wilma and also marked his 20th year as a Rotarian.  A contest was held recognizing chronically short pantsed  Bob Jahncke, Walt Barnes, Dan Kiernan, and Mike Oates. The Club was asked which of these esteemed members would be the best panhandler. Walt Barnes won by a landslide!

Opportunity Drawing:

Mark Giess had the lucky number but did not draw the lucky card.  Bill Mathy donated the consolation prize.

Program:

Griff Duncan began his program about the FCLO production of Jekyll and Hyde by introducing famed musical stage actor Richard Lindsey accompanied by Fullerton’s own Vicki Schindele.  Richard sang a fantastic rendition of “This is the Moment” from the show.

Griff went on to explain the origins of the original story of Jekyll and Hyde and how it eventually became a Broadway Musical.  Griff also explained how he and his wife modified the story line of the Broadway show to make it more cohesive and the successes this newer version has had.

(Great program, as usual, Griff!)

Prez Tom closed the meeting with these sage words: “Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you ever regretted!”

Proposed new Member:
Mitch Hovey, Superintendent, Fullerton Elementary School District, by Minard Duncan
