Volume 67, Issue 6   Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

The meeting was opened by our very own President Tom.  Chet Schultz led us in the flag salute (a first for him in his short Rotary career).  Any song that includes the lyrics “I’m half crazy” is the song for us. Do Don and Howard know this group, or what?  They left us with a “Smile” on our faces for the duration of the meeting.

The invocation was led by Dean Stockwell who promptly informed his audience that they were not much different than 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders.  After that he led us in a Prayer for Peace, which was necessary to avoid his being put in the local stockades by the audience.

Rick Crane introduced Guests and Visiting Rotarians:

Al Triay introduced Paulette and Jean, wife and daughter who is a very special, Special Ed teacher.  Chris Meyer introduced us to Rob Ferrier, a fellow employee and friend.

Maryalyce Jeremiah introduced us to Marlon Morton , an assistant coach for CSUF Men’s team.  He knows every good player in Southern CaliforniaDeb Koff proudly introduced us to Shana Beyrl, who is a hospice nurse and Deb’s daughter.

  • Bob Jahncke wants us to check our entries for the roster and you can include cell phone numbers now!
  • Howard Wood announced “Harmony Under the Stars” for a great show and a lot of fun!  See him for tickets.
  • Rick Crane has pictures of the Ball Game last weekend with about 60 Rotarians.
  • Jim McKay announced that Ed Little got lucky in Del Mar last week.
  • Boys Scouts sent us a thank you for the Scouting donation from last year.  The letter also noted that we have a great female contingency in the club!

Boo to Recognition Master, Joyce Capelle!  Howard Wood needed to explain why there were two different versions of the song just sung.  Back to the “I’m half crazy” issue again at a cost of $10.  Pictures taken at the Orange County Fliers of Fullerton were strongly slanted to Rotary Sunrise.

Recognitions (continued)
Tom Meyer was fined $100 for his picture, and it was reduced to $50 for wearing a Fullerton Rotary shirt.  Rotary Rocks tee shirts were highlighted at the Flier’s event and all Rotarian’s who wore one had fines completely waived.  Mike Oates was called on the carpet for not keeping his mouth shut and assessed a $20 fine for putting both his feet in his mouth at the same time.  Randy McFarland’s table was threatened fines for kibitzing and for a –0- fine comment, the table had to cough up $87.50 each and were significantly outnumbered by 1 woman to 7 men at the table.  Bill Klinghoffer had a big day on August 11, 2007, and was fined because he did not remember that it was the day he joined our ‘fine’ club.  Jim Williams had an anniversary for 29 years as a Rotarian this month as well.  Jim also has an anniversary this month, was fined last week for that.  On 8/14/71 he learned that a successful marriage was dependent upon always ending his conversations with Sally with the phrase, “yes dear.”  Don Ludwig has an anniversary today and the fine was waived if he could answer what the most popular song the day he got married was (Volare), and $25 was assessed for not knowing.  Mike Escalante was credited $100 if he could answer the most popular song on a day that was not his anniversary.  “Lean Back” by the Terror Squad on his not anniversary was the answer.  Fred Johnson $25 for leading the Pilgrims to AmericaLee Myhre is 82 years young and he shares a birthday with Madonna, no fine.  Lee Brockett is now 61.  What famous actress does he share a birthday with (Jill St. John.)  Who was she?

Opportunity Drawing was for $75.00 and Ed Little won again for a second chance at the money.  Ed got R10 from Dan Fisk for the 3 of spades.

President Tom’s hat from Rosary High School covered his face when Tom’s daughter elbowed our District Governor’s daughter who played for Mater Dei.  Tom introduced and the District Governor  John Brainerd and his wife Pat.  Our theme this year is “Rotary Shares” and he is here to speak about our passion for service individually and how it is captured in our club.  Governor John is here to help with ideas and listen to our clubs questions and concerns.  Membership, Introduction of Successful Service Projects locally and internationally, Rotary Foundation and Developing Leadership in the club are the four areas of interest he addressed today.

President Tom closed with, “The high destiny of the individual is to serve rather than rule.”  (Albert Einstein)
