Volume 66, Issue 49 Rota-Scribe: Joe Lins

By-Law Committee produces Results.
Our New By-Laws are ready for approval. Please read & come to the next meeting for discussion. Vote scheduled for June 20. (Click to get Copy.)

Our president, Terri Grassi, gracefully rang the bell opening our meeting at 12:22pm.  After asking for a round of applause she was able to receive a large round of such as she is coming to the end of a very successful tenure as club President.

I thought the pledge to our great flag was EXTREMELY well led by Joe Lins.

David Schoen gave the invocation asking for God’s blessings on all the seniors in our community.  It finally dawned on yours truly that he was referring to all the graduates who are moving on to their careers or higher learning.

Mr. Howard Wood accompanied by Don Ludwig on the piano orchestrated a rousing rendition of O. Columbia the gem of the ocean followed by the ever popular “SMILE”.

Next on the agenda was the infamous Tony Amato introducing our guests. JoAnn Brannock introduced the Retired executive secretary at SimSci, Doti Lynn.  Minard Duncan introduced his entourage of Pam Keller, Linda Moser, Estella Gaimm and Dr. Harris Done.  Dr. Done thanked our club for our leadership position and generosity toward the Dental Clinics.  He did correct the introduction of his education, not a UCLA graduate at all, he is a proud graduate of USC.  Jim Williams brought along Blake Smith while Bill Mathey introduced us to a prospective new member, Dan Ouweleen.  Madam President introduced Anthony LuPriore and Tom Santoro.  Tony also helped us welcome Owen Dean from Fullerton Sunrise and Harry Jacobs from Whittier.  Don Bankhead introduced past President and Honorary member Dr. Bill Lenahan.

Moving right along, Terri began the announcements by asking us to read the amended by-laws (copies available - Click on the Headline at the top) and be prepared to vote on them at next weeks meeting.  Dean Heiser asked where the modification was relating to recall action when we are unhappy with leadership.  Terri ignored the question and went on to thank Tom Meyer, Sandi Hayes and Bill Klinghoffer for representing the club Friday night at the Youth Concert at Plummer.

Terri also gave us a brief history on the origination of Fathers Day and wished all the Fathers a great day this Sunday.  Don’t forget to attend this weeks Council Meeting, Tuesday at 3:30 our very own Don Bankhead will be recognized and thanked for an amazing 50 years of service to our city.  Thank You Don.

Robert Jahncke let us know of the passing of Fred Johnson’s mother last week after a long illness.

The Fullerton Boys and Girls Club Good Guys party at the Savage residence on Mirimar is priced at $35.00 per person.  Leslie McCarthy chimed in and let us know that the food will be wonderful and of course alcohol will be served.  She then segwayed into the Boys & Girls Club Richmond Branch and the playground equipment that was donated by Jamba Juice, they need help in assembly – Friday June 22.

Joyce Capelle reminded us to RSVP to Terri’s demotion night on June 27.  Come one come all.  Joann Brannock politely asked Chief McKinley to come forward.  She thanked him for the wonderful presentation he gave a few weeks ago and rewarded him with a cool looking police statue.  Terri then recognized Bill Klinghoffer for his work on the newest nine.  She also thanked Bob Sattler for his service to the Rotary Foundation Board and congratulated a surprised Rick Crane for his appointment to said board.

With the potential to win $85.00 Rick Crane had lucky number 9190 and all he needed to do was draw an ace to claim the prize.  The $10.00 consolation prize was his from a generous John Derry.

Recognitions:

Pastor Rick introduced the Rotary Jeopardy game hosted by our very own Jimmy Trabeck Williams featuring famous presidents, entertainers, politicians and athletes.  Randy McFarland was able to avoid the fine by knowing something about a quote by Andy Worhall.  Rick Crane was recognized for his Daughter going off to Japan and remembering which president was obsessed with clocks.  Bob Sattler was also recognized for going out to pasture from the Foundation Board and was able to whittle down his fine to $25 for knowing which president was is charge of city maintenance.  Bill Klinghoffer was able to negotiate his fine down to $50 and Bob Radde is celebrating his 52nd wedding anniversary.  Not to be outdone, Chet Schultz is celebrating 63 years of marital bliss.  Pat McKinley was asked what his most famous bust was, he deferred to Dr. Dick Jones who claims it was a 44!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ray Hanson will celebrate his birthday on the 15th.  Happy Birthday Ray.

Program

Now for the program.  Jay Kremer, Director of Programs, introduced Ron Wildermuth.  Ron is the public Information Officer with the Orange County Water District.  We learned about the ground water replenishment system (easy for you to say) and what a huge system it is to manage.  We spend more money on electricity to move water from Northern California to the Southern California dessert which we call home.  Our surplus is way down and this summer our water supply will be stressed to say the least.  We haven’t had a massive water project since the 1960’s and we continue to import more people and build more homes.  Purification of sewer water is critical as we recycle all the way down stream.  Conservation of water will not provide enough water, yet we must conserve and desalination is just too expensive.  A solution is Micro Filtration which cleans water through reverse osmosis.  A new plant is being built in Fountain Valley and is set to go online later this year.  A few of the benefits are reduction of electricity, enough to power 21,000 homes.  Water diversity will help mitigate draughts.  The project is designed to allow our water bills to go up slower instead of faster and South Orange County water bills are more expensive as a result of longer travel.  Our ground water replenish system has received broad based community support as we continue to purify water that has been with us since the beginning of time.

Next week, Jimmy Campanis of the Dodgers will share his wisdom and witt.

Closing Thought by President Terri, “Learn to pause or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you!”
