ATTENTION ON DECK! DISTRICT 5320 GOVERNOR ARRIVING!
DG Grant Engle,of the Fountain Valley Rotary honors us with a visit to tell of the "State of the Rotary Union" as seen from his position. He tells us about the "new generation" of Rotarians by taking a walk back into the history of Rotary with a great video Power Point of icons of the past. More under PROGRAM. |
Franki Berry then led the Pledge (Beat Army!) followed by the Senior Sextet of Grif (basso), Ray (tenor), Howard (alto), Jim B. and Jim Y. (baritones), Keith (trainee) providing the musical part of the meeting.
RECOMMISSIONING CEREMONY. Carl Camp led off the induction procedure of Maryalyce Jeremiah into the Rotary Club of Fullerton. He cited the close fellowship membership. Although the exchanges may be short, there is a feeling of camaraderie in the Club. Maryalyce had some most gracious comments on why she rejoined when returning to coaching women's basketball at CSUF. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Buck Catlin reported the status of Don Bankhead who is currently undergoing knee surgery at Centennial Hospital in Inglewood. Don will be away from City Hall for eleven days undergoing therapy. Carol suggests we check with the City Council Secretary (738-6311) or Buck Catlin (871-7076) for updates on Don's progress. (Word from the hospital is that Don is keeping the therapy ward nurses well entertained.) ELECTIONS FOR NEW CLUB PRESIDENT: All hands should be on deck next week to participate in the election of the 2005-2006 Club president. As of now, Bob Savage is completing the unexpired term of Greg Franklin (at no increase in pay -- unusual considering public employee retirement packages today!) VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS, Presiding Introductor Al Tetreault |
FINEMASTER Jim Blackburn led off with a donated joke that read minus 30 db on the Club reaction scale. Thus prompting Jim to ask for better humor material being sent to him by Rotarians.
RECOGNITIONS: Scott Dowds, in recognition of daughter's entering the U.S. Air Force Academy in time to witness his football team losing to Navy this year. Jim made up for the initial joke "turkey" by telling a winner about a farmer who bested an alligator he wrestled in a pond in Alabama.
THE PROGRAM: "A Walk Back in Rotary Time" DG Grant Engle chronicled the 100 years in Rotary with a great illustrated speech of how things looked and costs as time passed. In 1903 the motorcycle was tops in modern US transportation, and electricity was first supplied to the public. By 1905 Rotary public service projects included placing public toilet facilities on subway entrances. 1922 marked the establishment of Rotary International and adoption of a suitable pin. 1932 heralded the "Four Way Test". Following WWI, Rotary became an organization dedicated to World Peace. It is notable that eleven signers of the United Nations Charter in 1947 were Rotarians. The Paul Harris Fellow concept originated in 1960 to make possible such endeavors as Polio Plus. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 Rotary membership increased with new Clubs in Iron curtain countries. DG Engle left us with the thought, "The Best of Rotary Lies Ahead" Prez Savage, new on the job, had to resurrect one of Bill Mathy's clocks and a CD of FUHS Music Department Performances as tokens of appreciation to DG Engle.
