President Bill called us to order; Kathy Allred Blake (recently returned from Eastern Europe) led us in the Pledge of Allegiance (version 2). Kathy was followed by the "Grifftones" with Bill Ludwig at the piano. The Reverend Dr. Leroy Fulton provided a granddaughters based illustration of choosing carefully the persons to whom we would "look up" and being a good example for those to may look up to us. It was nice to see a return to roast beef for lunch, although some variety in salad dressings might be interesting. Fred Johnson facilitated the introductions: Visiting Rotarians Walter Barnes --Kapaa, Hawai'I (Kauai) former Fullerton Rotary member Guests/Hosts Patsy Marshall (former mayor of Buena Park), guest of Franki Berry (who celebrated her B'day today) Endless Announcements David Schoen-we will go to Santa Anita in March (save your $) Bob Jahncke - If you want to receive Rotagram via Us Mail, please inform Bob; it will cost $5 a qtr for a subscription. Other wise E-mail. Doing the Rotagram via E-mail could save $2000 per year. (All the Republicans present decided to use the savings to have a dues refund) |
Griff Duncan - announced that Rich Little would be the mainliner for our 1/31/04 benefit concert with FUHS prize winning performers being the warm up act. Griff invited all present to Deal with Creel (Winston Creel) re tickets. Prez Bill Mathey announced the recent passing of Janie Noppe's mother. Bill also recognized Leslie McCarthy as Rotarian of the week for her service as a Rota-scribe. Our dutiful Prez also mentioned the club's expectation re fund raising by passing the hat, i.e. let's not do it. ID Theft and Crime via Technology Pat McKinley introduced Detective Andrew Goodrich of the FPD, who provided a great deal of information regarding these increasingly popular crimes. Armed robbery is a high risk generally low pay off crime. ID theft is the reverse, i.e. low risk and higher potential pay off. ID theft is best accomplished via having someone else's SSN and using it as if it were your own for purchases, credit, etc. Other possibilities involve gaining access to cash or goods via using someone else's credit/ debit card or bank account. The cyber world helps to accomplish all of the above. Much mischief can occur without the victim's having been aware. There is, therefore good reason to be circumspect re revealing too much about yourself to strangers or persons, who don't really have a good reason to know. Tips included: checking one's credit report frequently, safeguarding SSN, PIN, account numbers, etc. Use quality electronic firewalls, virus protection, etc. Be careful with E-mail connections that are more easily breached, e.g. DSL, cable, wireless. Consider encryption and the use of a shredder. A fine program delivered on scant notice!! Come next week of der Oktoberfest mit biere und strudel und oom pah pah! Proposed Members: David Borsari, Atty, by Dale Hardner and Dr. William Baugh, Dermatology by Franki Berry. |
