LOCAL FULLERTON BUSINESS A MAJOR PLAYER IN PROVIDING BATS FOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL!
Bob Cirillo, Vice President of GLOMAR BASEBALL gives us a fascinating picture of the how, who, when and where the Major League players get their batting tools of the trade. It is a lot more technical than the average fan knows.

Following the pledge by Howard Wood, we had a Septet of Lee Mhyre, Ray Ashcroft, Bill Peloquin, Jim Young, Howard Wood, and Janie Noppe, led by Jim Blackburn. "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" rendered in honor of today's speaker. Accompaniment by Don Ludwig on the Steinway (--not). Past Prez Mike Oates rendered the "Thought for the Day" enjoining the Rotarians assembled that they can be most effective by remaining calm and collected when life becomes confused and aimless. Interpreted liberally, he seemed to be restating the old adage, "If you can keep your calm when everything around you seems to be headed for disaster, maybe you don't understand the problem". VISITORS heralded by Ray Hansen: GUESTS welcomed: KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS SAT October 25 11:00AM Claude Sympson Memorial 1st Presbyterian Church. City of Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast 0700AM Oct 29th Radisson Hotel. Fullerton Rotary Club major fund raiser January 31st. Amato's Haberdashery is offering Rotary Monogrammed Polo shirts for $30. Rotary Foundation Grand Prize Drawing Tickets 12 for $100 Rotarians of the Week: Rotascribes Jim Blackburn, Minard Duncan, Leslie McCarthy. PREZ MATHY's HUMOR MOMENT - "Why is baseball the national game?" The PREZ quoted a spate of homespun homilies. Unconvincing. ANDY ROONEY on CBS "60 Minutes" says the major leagues play 2310 games starting in April and can't find out which is the best team till late October thus screwing up the football season. Also only 5% of the pitchers who started these games finished after throwing a 5 ounce ball 60 feet fewer than 80 times and then left for the locker room to count their money. |
FOOTBALL SCORE: "Game of the Week" was Navy's upset of the Armed Service Professional Team, AIR FORCE. All the basements at the Naval Academy were filled with hurricane Isabel water, but the spirits were high in Bancroft Hall. VISITING FINEMASTER DICK BOYLE called up 29 Rotarians for various misdeeds or identities and fined them an average of $50. Pat McKinley, specifically for being the highest paid police chief in Orange County. Pat protested and wanted to know the source of this! Some wag Rotarian suggested the finemaster meant "overpaid" police chief in O.C. PROGRAM GLOMAR Baseball Bat Company. Bob Cirillo treated us to a fascinating tale about the baseball base manufacturing business. His company has been in business for ten years and is now a major player in this field. 130 major league players use their bats. viz., Jose Molina, Chipper Jones, Del Eckstine. The equipment manager of each major league team is the key contact. Wood from New England: maple and Northern ash are the only wood materials. Aluminum bats are dangerous and not allowed in many leagues, including non-professional teams. A bat can be shaped in less than a minute, but specialized orders take about 5 minutes. Greg Franklin and Wally Bartelt were the lucky raffle ticket holder for the two bats Bob presented to the Club. NEXT WEEK Update on AMERIGE HEIGHTS community development. |
