After Jim McKamy led the club in the pledge of allegiance, Griff Duncan conducted the singing of God Bless America and Smile, assisted by Ray Ashcroft, Jim Young, Leroy Fulton, and Janie Noppe, accompanied as always by Don Ludwig on piano. Dale Schumacher demonstrated that the worth of a person is the same no matter how crumpled and worn they may be. Dale also demonstrated the rapt attention one can receive as long as they are waving a Fifty-dollar bill! Bob Savage introduced visiting Rotarians and guests, which included Don Andert from Orange Rotary, and Zahia Muhareb (guest of Tony Montenegro) and Teddi Vallejo (guest of Cameron McCune). President Bill was, wisely, reluctant to relinquish the microphone so he made most of the announcements himself today: October 29th is Fullerton Rotary Car Show day.Bring your favorite car and show it off for possible prizes and trophy awarded by the Car Show King and Queen. Contests for coolest car, fastest off the line and best off-road performance might be awarded. Rich Little concert tickets will be on-sale next week. Prices are $50 on the floor and $45 in the balcony. October 29th is the City of Fullertonns Mayorrs Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 at the Radisson Hotel at Harbor Blvd. (at the 91 Fwy). Phil Silverman recently donated a trailer to a local marching band in the name of Fullerton Rotary. The trailer will bear the Fullerton Rotary logo so that all will know of our clubs continued community investment. Next time you see Phil, thank him for his kind donation. It was announced that 50 year member Claude Sympson passed away recently in Coronado. Claude's children made a $1000 dollar donation to the Fullerton Rotary Foundation in Claude's name. President Bill awarded the Rotarian of the Month to all five of the Rotagramms roving reporters. One for each Wednesday in October. Bill Schenk, Buck Catlin, Minard Duncan, Jim Blackburn, and Leslie McCarthy share the honors for October. Chet Shutltz's number finally came up and he pocketed $60 for knowing how long Pope John Paul II has been the Pope. (25yrs). Chet donated his winnings to the Foundation. Finemaster Tony Lagomarsino recognized Jim Thompson, Chris Fraschetti, and Jo Brannock for their birthdays. Bill Mathy was recognized for he and Robynns 29 anniversary, as was Chris Fraschetti for her and Bob's 6th anniversary. |
Bill Hite introduced Bob Hathaway and Dale Hardner for Craft talks. Bob Hathaway was born in Birmingham, Alabama but moved with his mother to Brooklyn, New York as a child. He creditts the Flatbush Boys Club for helping to keep him out of trouble as a young boy. After graduating high school in Long Island, Bob joined the Navy and his hitch was extended due to the Korean War. In the Navy Bob was a Weather forecaster in the Naval Weather Service. Upon leaving the Navy Bob attended the New York College of Engineering and one winter during a snowstorm was offered a job at North American Aviation in Inglewood, Ca. Bob worked on many interesting, if little known (classified) projects during his years with North American. One of these projects was for an operating system for the Philadelphia Electric Company, which is still in use today. Bob pointed out that the PEC was one electrical system that did not fail during the recent blackout. Bob began taking law courses at night to allow him to better understand the contracts he worked on at North American. He took so many law courses that he was able to sit and pass the Bar examination. Bob's mid-career course correction found him setting up a Law practice in Buena Park. After 15 years of practicing Law, Bob went back to school and got his teaching credential and a Masters degree in Education. Bob taught at a Jr. High School in south central LA and then taught mathematics at Walker Jr. High School in Buena Park. Bob has been on the Fullerton School Board for nearly twenty years. If that's not enough career changes for you, Bob also mentioned that he supervises at his familyys pizza restaurant (Michael Angelos). Dale Hardner cleverly outlined his life in 10 easy steps. He began to formulate his life-long philosophy at an early age and credits his grandma for many well learned life lessons. These lessons enabled him to build and succeed in many aspects of his life. Marriage (42 years and still building); family (3 children and 5 granddaughters, so far); early retirement that provides time to nurture and enjoy the above. In the absence of his Rotary sponsor Tom Meyer and having completed all of his newest nine requirements, Dale defrockedd himself by peeling away his newest nine shirt and revealing his brand new blue Rotary golf shirt worn underneath. As always, if you werennt at todayys meeting you missed the best part of any luncheon: two enjoyable craft talks. Good job Bob and Dale. |
