"ONE LEGACY-- a Southern California transparent donor network"

Bob Sattler introduced us to a personal experience in donating life saving and life enhancing organs. Newport Beach Rotarian Phil Anst and Exec. Director Tenaya Wallace held the Club in rapt attention. More under "PROGRAM".

Following the Pledge by Alan Atwell, the Rotary Quartet of Jim Blackburn, Jim Young, Leroy Fulton, and Bob Savage, led the delegation with "My Country Tis of Thee" (with consent of Julianne Haynes for any unintended slight to Her Britannic Majesty). The rendition of "Home on the Range" by the membership chorus resembled a round-up of unruly cattle trying to follow with the pianist and the director out of synch Prez Mathy is asking the board to approve purchase of a metronome.

"Thought for the Day" presenter Joyce Capelle recited three parables from barnyard folklore about the travails of becoming too involved with the excrement of birds, fowl, various pastoral quadrapeds and farm hands. The collective "Management Lesson" was "If you try to please every one, you'll likely end up on the business side of the outhouse". Or words to that effect. With that, and sober words of thanks, the brethren and sistren went off to an appetitizing lunch.

THE PROGRAM

An excellent presentation on the role of "ONE LEGACY", the need for donors of living organs and tissues. Bob Sattler told us the very human situation of Roselva's death due to a brain aneurysm which led the family to consider organ donation. "ONE LEGACY " organization with 14 transplant centers in So. California has 89,000 potential recipients waiting donation only 1% of which are suitable. They serve 225 hospitals. Time is of the essence. Although a potential donor may have a card indicating agreement it is still necessary to have the next of kin approve the donation. It is a family matter. A celebrity or politically important person has no special status. The major religions are in support of the concept. As many as eight recipients could benefit from one donor. There is no charge to the donor. Considering the need to have an accurate phone number readily available for a donor, Nate Kvetny queried the desirability of having a tattoo somewhere on one's anatomy. His suggested part of the body for such an inscription drew murmers of derision from the Rotarians. All-in-all, a most informative program. It was suggested that Rotary form an Organ Awareness Team. Many thanks, Bob, Tenaya and Phil.

Next week: Ken Kaisch, "The Psychology of Golf", summarized by the time-old golfer's adage, "It ain't the golf club, it's the jackass on the handle".
