Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

Prez Bill Mathy announced his tenure today with microphone problems that that made him sound like he was talking in slow motion one moment and like Mickey Mouse the next. The whole club wonders how many weeks it will take before he solves his audio problems.

The Fabulous Grifftones (Howard Wood, Bill Peloquin, Jim Young and Griff Duncan) led the club in the Star Spangled Banner in deference to the myriad star spangled banners that appeared around the meeting room. Dick Jones told his thought for the day reminding us of four basic freedoms that our forefathers and our Bill of Rights guarantees us: The Freedom of Free Speech; Freedom of Worship; Freedom from Want; and Freedom from Fear. Those basic freedoms are still being defended, protected, and enjoyed by all Americans.

Rick Crane introduced visiting Rotarians Dick Boyle from Fullerton South (who has been awarded a permanent visitors badge!), and Frank Blazar from Brea.

Rotarians with visitors included Bill Peloquin (wife Wilma), Ray Ashcroft (wife Mary), Mike Escalante (secretary Kathy Franz), Ray Hansen (St. Jude associate Cary Tamura), Leslie McCarthy (associate David Silverman), and Chuck Munson (Mary Alyce McHenry).

Prez Bill made a rather lengthy presidential address that made the club start dreaming of demotion night already.. But then Mike Oates started up with a list of announcements that made most of us appreciate our new president all the more.

Among X-Prez Oates announcements was the upcoming Fullerton Rotary Program committee meeting on Tuesday July 8th at 7:30 A.M. at Carrowws on Harbor and Berkeley.

Also applications are available for the Fullerton Boys and Girls Club 10th annual Golf Tournament to be held in Coyote Hills on July 14th.

Prez Bill inaugurated his new Rotarian of the Week award (a nifty Fullerton Main Rotary desk clock) to his choices of this years first Rotarians of the Week. Jack Hayes, Keith Mills, Jim Williams, and Bill Peloquin for their part in producing the skits and songs for the recent memorable Demotion night.

First week fine master Art Levine fined Jim Blackburn, Dick Jones, Prez Bill, Jana Bogart, and even himself, before recognizing Rotarians for special events which included Vern Andrews (Barbara's Birthday), Paul Dudley (Karen's Birthday), Tom Meyer (Linda's birthday) and Prez Bill (Robyn's birthday). Jeff Hutchison, Harry Brown, Dick Glaus and Dick Jones all celebrate anniversaries this week and Claude Jones and Don Bankhead were recognized for Birthdays... Ken Kaisch welcomes his first daughter (in-law) by way of marriage to his son.

Claude Jones won the first opportunity drawing of the year but missed the first question (where was the first international Rotary convention held (outside of the U.S.)) Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ray Ashcroft introduced Dr. Charles Kissel (ably assisted by Mary Ashcroft) who gave an informative lecture on the origins of the United States flag. All in attendance learned much more about the Stars and Stripes than they ever new before.. If this is any indication of the programs to come it is going to be a very interesting year ahead.
