Volume 62, Issue 11
Written and reported by Jim Blackburn

The Usual Beginning

President Mike sounded the bell and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The assigned "pledger" was apparently AWOL. Bob, Jim and Jim led those present in "My Country Tis of Thee," "Take me out to the Ball Game," and Smilee to the accompaniment of Don Ludwig.. Ray Hansen's Thought for the Day concerned a long list of wise superlatives and a request that the Almighty accept and use us in the betterment of the world.

Oodles of Visitors

Jim Lapak used his fine speaking voice to introduce our many guests:: Sydney Scarborough and Tony Montenegro guests of John Kunau; Cathy Gack and Bob Hathaway guests of Mike Escalante; Evelyn Bowen guest and daughter of the Honorable Don Bankhead; Anthony Lagomarsino guest of Bill Mathy. (Dick Boyle was not present.)

How We Get New Members

President Mike brought us up-to-date on how we get new members:
*     must be nominated by a member
*     must check out the classification of proposed new members
*     name and classification must appear twice in Rotagram
*     recent felony convictions are not a plus
*     member must fill out and submit application

In gratitude for our rapt attention, Mike Oates told us a Texas story about a kid, a teacher and his brother's boots.

Announcements Galore (many and long)

Several members took fair, if not lengthy, advantage of free announcement day in honor of the upcoming marriage of the last remaining single member of the Oates family.

Al Tetreault touted the upcoming Alzheimer's Walk and solicited contributions (10/5)

Debra Koff and Ronnie Hewett did a duet marketing venture re. the Dare to Dream- Kids Auction (10/19).

Towards the end of Debra's soliloquy - she noted the upcoming Taste of Fullerton.

Bob Jahncke highlighted the need for Grand Jurors, and several folks nominated their business competitors.

Rotarians of the Month and Recognitions

Bob Sattler, Don Ludwig, Bob Jahncke and Phil Strauss were recognized as Rotarians of the Month.

Terri Grassi ($20) and Chris Meyer (52) were recognized for their B'days

Les McCarthy was recognized for the B'day of her Kiwanian husband, Kevin and received a substantial discount

Craft Talks from All Over

Bill Hite had the winning ticket but missed the question re. brand names (Oldsmobile?). While he was up Bill introduced Chris Meyer and John Kunau for their craft talks.

Chris Meyer (Fullerton's City Manager) was born 52 years ago in California because his parents had been here during WWII doing secret stuff on Catalina Island. His Claremont-based childhood was interrupted once so he could spend a year in Germany, where he attended a German school and noted after three months that the other students spoke another language.. A move to Newport Beach heightened his interest in sailing and scuba. After a tour of several of California's fine public colleges and universities, Chris received a degree form SDSU. A few years later, he entered graduate school and became an intern with the City of Fullerton. The city wisely hired a year later, and he has been here ever since. When not managing the city well, Chris, Janny (Bobbie Catlin's daughter) and their family enjoy SCUBA, fly fishing , trips to Montana and target shooting. The latter is not practiced within the city limits or at meetings of the city council ( Is that redundant?)

John Kunau has led a gypsy -like, but very interesting, life. His addresses read like a railroad schedule: Kansas, Southern California, Bakersfield, Nassau, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Fort Lewis, WA, Houston, Santa Rosa, Temecula, Albuquerque and Denver. John's Volga Deutscher father worked his way up in the oil business. After college at OU and OCU, the younger Mr. Kunau did the same, winding up a VP with several oil companies. He even worked a few years with the famous Armand Hammer. John was widowed several years ago and more recently married Sally Underwood, who apparently makes him very happy. John obviously is fond of his grandson with whom he recently traveled to the wilds of Australia.

We are blest to have both of these gentlemen in the Rotary Club of Fullerton.
