DR. BARBARA STONE's ELECTION PROGNOSTICATIONS
A candid, thoughtful and experienced view of the Stateand Ballot Elections Issues
and what will probably happen on Nov 5th.
PREZ OATES enjoined the assembled local elected dignitaries to the head table to take part in WALLY SWATKOWSKI's Pledge. (They all knew it, including the "under God" phrase!)
Led by Basso PELOQUIN, Baritone SAVAGE, and Tenor YOUNG, the brethren and sistern Rotarians indeed smiled during the Club rendidtion of "Smiles". They were forewarned by Carolyn TORMEY last week.
"Thought for the Day" orator TOM MEYER lamented the callousness of corporate managers (like Ross Perot) in fleecing their companies while demanding loyalty from their employees. (Ed. Note: Perot, member of USNA Class of '53 didn't learn that at the "Boat School!). Tom had six Loyal Rules worth reporting here: 1. Play to win. 2. Be picky. 3. Keep it simple. 4. Reward the right results. 5. Listen hard. 6. Preach what you practice. Just like the Rotary "Four Way Test".
Lots of visitors and guests on hand for a typically excellent Rotary Club of Fullerton Program.

JAY RITCHEY. guest of CHRIS FRASCHETTI | ||

ANNOUNCEMENTS

* District 5320 Foundation Dinner/Dance November 9th.
* | YWCA Week without Violence, October 20-26 with Honorary Chairperson Police Chief Pat McKinley. And the Candle light vigil on Saturday, October 26 in downtown Fullerton. Erin Runnion who lost her daughter, Samantha to violence will be there with Chief McKinley. |
RAFFLE: Although JIM LAPAK's #1767 got him to the question, he didn't know that the LA LAKERS lost to the LA CLIPPERS in a practice game in Bakersfield . (BAKERSFIELD!! There's a basketball audience THERE? Oh, I forgot. DUNCAN JOHNSON hails from those parts.)
RECOGNITION MASTER JIM WILLIAMS made note of:
JIM THOMPSON for several absent meetings while touring 10,000 miles across the USA.
PAT MCKINLEY, MAYOR DON BANKHEAD, COUNCILMAN DICK JONES for allowing the reopening of "Rhonda's Reading Room" in Downtown Fullerton. Bad form. Former Rotarian and Fullerton Police Chief MARTY HAIRABEDIAN had put the "massage parlor" (!) out of business in 1986. Current City Administration apparently showing it is "pro- business".
MWD Director JIM BLAKE for putting water storage industry CADIZ, Inc. out of business. Apparently, the MWD is "anti-business". (Ed. note: We Rotarians have gotta get our act together here!)
Rotary members McGarvey, Ullrich, Bridgford, Bates, McGee for being on American Legion Post #142 Commander's Club which supports community organizations.
PROGRAM:
DR. BARBARA STONE, legendary CSUF (Yeah!) Political Science professor launched into the November 5, 2002 election issues. First, the Ballot Initiatives. With the state being short of about $20 billion short in a total budget of $100 billion, no one will do any great harm by failing to vote for any one of the five bond measures on their ballot. The state is in real big General Fund trouble and any bond passage issue will exercerbate the problem.
Prop 52, which allows election day registration is impractical. It can work for small states and rural communities, but in big cities like LA, the Registrars say it will implode the system. Impossible to administer. That's how "Ace" Ventura got elected in Wisconsin.
The electorate doesn't really like either candidate for Governor and the race will boil down to which it relates to better. It will be the undecided voters in what will probabaly be a low turn out election that decide the race. Los Angeles County is the big gorilla on the block and where the late TV $$/effort will be focussed.
Always a top program, Dr. Stone could have held the audience for another hour. Many thanks.
October 16th Program: Forum for City Council Election:
Candidates (6) for TWO year seat.
