Prez Mike starts a busy meeting Don Ludwig led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and then hurried to the piano to accompany Howard and the gang in America and Smile. Former Prez and ever succinct Bob Jahncke provided a brief but lovely thought for the day about the essentiality of sticking one's neck out. This was the last short speech of the day. While Ludwig played some wonderful old tunes, e.g. "It must have been Moonbeams", we dined on spaghetti and meatballs, that actually contained some meat.
Visitors and Guests Marissa Ayala of Fullerton Sunrise was an only but much appreciated visiting Rotarian. Guests of Rotarians included: Gloria Radde guest of husband, Bob Radde Opportunity Drawing Diane Masseth-Jones correctly identified PDG Jim Young as the Ace of Spades and won the never expanding $40 pot. An Endless Litany of Announcements, but not a Record > Jeff Hutchison announced that a fund within the Fullerton Rotary Club Foundation has been established in the honor and memory of Roselva Sattler. This fund will be used to support the Reading programs in the Fullerton Schools, especially Golden Hills. > Dick Mathewson provided more detail re the Reading by Nine Program that we already support in conjunction with the LA Times. Basically, appropriate reading materials are acquired for about one third the regular price. > June 10 is the date for the Sunny Hills Boat Race. > Claude Jones did a quick survey and determined that we need several more families to host visiting RYE youngsters for June 20-22. > Claude also updated us on the orphanage projection in the Baja. The contractor is back on task. > Rick Crane introduced Coach Jim Burton of Troy HS who recognized the Club and two stellar athletes from the City Track Meet, which we have hosted for 14 years. It was noted that the high school track teams triple in size on this day each year. |
We Get a "J" AKA a new Member PDG Young and Past President Ray Hansen ably presided over the induction J. Richey as our newest new member. Recognitions and Lame Material Recognized for Nancy's B'day was Les Christensen Jim Young and Jeff Hutchison were recognized respectively for their 82nd and 49th B'days Blackburn used some of the worse material ever and sat down (hopefully before it got too bad!) Also recognized were Mike Oates for owning a bar that was temporarily low on whiskey and Vern Andrews for forgetting to get his change for the "opportunity drawing" Paul Harris visits Fullerton Rotary Again Many RI districts wait years to "see" and hear Paul Harris, but we have "connections", and Rotary's founder came to visit us as he has before only he seems to get better with age. Paul Harris was born in 1868 in Racine WI. After his parents divorced he moved to his grandparents home in Wallingford VT. He was a bit of a rapscallion and was sent to military school, which seemed to "take" for him. His first two college tries (UVM and Princeton) did not go well, but eventually finished law school at Iowa. After five years of vagabonding- Paul took root in Chicago, where he founded Rotary with several other professionals and business men in 1905. The name Rotary was chosen because the members rotated their "brown bag lunches" from one place of business to another. (Craft talks with the real things to show, smell and feel). More clubs were formed in US and Canada, and the Rotary Foundation was begun in 1917. The Clubs expanded to Latin America and then Europe and then Australia and New Zealand followed by Africa and finally Asia. Thus the world was encircled by Rotary at the time of Paul's death in 1947 A man of considerable energy, he felt that Rotary has common strength via the Objects of Rotary and the Four Way Test, but even greater strength through the diversity of its membership. We are blessed to have had Paul Harris with us in Fullerton. Thank you Jim Young. |
