Rotarians hummed the Graduation March as Jim McKamy was called up by Prez Mike to have his Newest Nine ribbon removed. McKamy, congratulations! Recognitions As usual, Jim Blackburn entertained us with a couple of good stories and then fined several Rotarions: Birthday-Mark Zane, $27.50 Spouse Birthday-Dennis Ullrich, $25 Anniversary-Bob Sattler, 25 years! Santa Anita pictures-various fines for Bob Radde, Winnie Houston, Bill Kincaid, Minard Duncan Program A delightful program was presented by Buck Catlin's daughter, Jo Dee Jacob. She is an exceptional woman who is the Executive Director of the Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council. She comes with impressive credentials, including Captain in the U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer of Guam, worked in the Pentagon, and was the first woman to hold several navy positions. She showed a short film about the history of girl scouting and we found out that today is the 91st birthday of the organization. Her training in the navy prepared her well for her current position as she says that the Girl Scout work requires the same logistics as she used in naval ordinance. The selling of Girl Scout cookies is a multi-million dollar business and they sell only at one time a year so people will look forward to enjoying the special cookies each year. Over 50 million American girls have participated in Girl Scouting. Girl Scout troops meet in homeless shelters, migrant farm camps, jail, and juvenile detention facilities, and over the internet. Over 2/3 of American women doctors, lawyers, educators and community leaders, and members of Congress were once Girl Scouts. Through a program titled Operation Thin Mint, the San Diego scouts plan to send a box of cookies to every man and woman serving in our armed forces who are fighting for our country. Jo Dee emphasized that the motivation in girl scouting is service, not money. Buck, thanks for arranging for a super program. Prez Mike concluded the meeting with these words of wisdom: Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. |
