President Mike Oates opened the meeting with his commanding voice and called upon Jeff Hutchison to lead the Flag Salute. Leroy Fulton, along with songsters Bill Peloquin, Bob Savage and Jim Young, directed us in singing America The Beautiful and Smile. In the Thought for the Day, Nate Kvetny thanked the Rotary women for their contributions to our club and the community by reading A Woman of Valor from Proverbs 31:10-21. A large ovation was given the women. As usual, Don Ludwig entertained us by playing great selections on the piano.
Chief Pat McKinley introduced Don Andert - Rotary Orange, Dick Boyle - Fullerton South, and Bill Gillespie - Fullerton South. Mike Escalante and Ray Hansen introduced guests Barbara Kilponen and Tony Montenegro respectfully.
The following were assessed $1 and made Announcements:
* Louis Koff - Taste of Fullerton at Fullerton Arboretum on Oct. 4 and Chamber of Commerce Golf Tourney at Coyote Hills on Oct. 11.
* Terri Grassi - Assemblywoman Lynn Daucher speaking at YWCA Annual Luncheon on Sept. 17 at the Radisson Hotel.
* Chris Fraschetti for Joyce Capelle - Crittenton Golf Tourney at Yorba Linda Country Club on Sept. 23
* Debra Koff - Boys and Girls Club Dinner, Dance, Auction on Oct. 19 at the Crowne Plaza Resort
* Vern Andrews encouraged us to get membership brochures for new members.
* Bill Peloquin told a joke and paid dearly for it.
Jim Lapak presented President Mike with postcards from children who attended the YMCA Summer Camp. The children wrote about their most enjoyable experiences and thanked Rotary for the opportunity.
Jeff Hutchison correctly answered (with a lot of help from the members) that Rita Moreno was the only actress that won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. He promptly donated the $50 to the Rotary Foundation.
Awards for Rotarians for the Month were given to Terri Grassi, Bill Hite, Jim McKamy and Rick Price for their excellent work at the Annual Rotarian Picnic. It was a lot of fun and a terrific success!
The softball team of Vern Andrews, John Christensen, Rick Crane, Damon Dragos, Minard Duncan, Greg Franklin, Bill Hite, Chris Hunt, Jeff Hutchison, Chris Lowe, Drew Napolin and led by Captain Rick Price were recognized for their valiant effort as they were the only team that played the "no ringer" rule. The other two clubs brought in young "potential Rotarians" to improve their lot. Our team had 1 win and 1 loss. Each was fined a dollar for a picture received!
Finemaster Dan Kiernan recognized the following milestones in August: Anniversaries - Don and JoAnn Ludwig, Carl and Charlotte Wilkins, Damon and Mara Dragos, Jo and Fred Brannock, Rick and Jeanne Crane, Al and Paulette Triay. Birthdays - Lee Myhre, Lee Brockett, Chris Hunt, Bob Sattler, Minard Duncan and Jim Williams.
Dan Kiernan fined Debra Koff, Nate Kvetny, Mike Oates and Bill Peloquin for their lack of joke telling skills.
Carl Camp presented an excellent program about General Principles in Investing. Carl explained that the S & P 500 has averaged 10.7% since 1926. For the period from 1995-99 gains of 28.6% per year were made. In 1998-99, most went down but the big companies carried the market. The bear market of 1973-74 was the worst since the Depression but the current records are equally as bad. Since July, when we hit bottom, the market has gone up 17%. Carl does not think we are in a permanent recession and feels the market may have turned around. He believes the market is currently undervalued and it is a good time to invest. Diversifying in the 4 basic categories of investments - cash and CD¹s, bonds, stocks and real estate - is the best bet. He suggests using tried and true principles and not going in and out of the market.
On a sad note, our president reported that the son of Jack Hayes passed away. Jim Marovich, who had been a long time member, is in the Yorba Linda Hospital. See Ray Hansen for details.
President Mike closed the meeting with these words of wisdom: Obstacles are things a person sees when they take their eyes off their goal.
