Craft Talks

Jo McAulay

Jo was born and raised on a farm in Mexico with her seven older brothers.. Her mother passed away early in her life and she went to live with her aunt.. She read a lot and did well in school.. Times with her aunt were difficult and she moved to the city to live with her brother and go to high school.. She had to work part-time to pay for her education.. Jo started college but admitted she spent more time partyingg than studying.. She took some time off and came to visit three of her brothers who were living in Fullerton.. She started studying English at Maple School and the Wilshire Center.. She got a job as a waitress where she met her future husband, Bill McAulay, a customer of hers..He finally asked her out and a couple years later got married.. She went back to school full-time and got her BA degree in Criminal Justice from CSUF.. She works with her husband at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary and is working on completing her masterrs degree at Chapman University in Marriage and Family Counseling.. Ultimately, her goal is to begin a private practice and specialize as a sex therapist.

Jim LaPak

Jim is the youngest of three children born in Norwalk, Connecticut.. Jim began his life in the Y very early.. He learned to swim at the local YMCA and became a self proclaimed Y-Rat... He joined a YMCA leadership club as a teenager and this propelled his career direction.. Jim had an early brush with Rotary also, receiving a Rotary scholarship to attend college.. Jim met his wife, Judie, and they had five children as he made his way up the YMCA ladder..After 20 years at the YMCA, Jim decided he needed a change and he and his wife bought a 30-room inn up in Maine. He quickly realized that innkeeping was not his style and began selling commercial real estate.. He took a job as a commercial mortgage broker with a company headquartered in Irvine and ultimately moved to Sunny SoCal. Jim felt the call of the Y again and has been rebuilding and revitalizing our local YMCA for 16 months now.

Prez Mike spoke for all of us when he thanked Jo and Jim for sharing with us and noted how much we all enjoy getting to know our members better through Craft Talks.
