Volume 61, Issue 44
Written and reported by
Jim Blackburn

Opening:
President Bill Peloquin opened the meeting and introduced Bob Bean who led us in the Flag Salute. Griff Duncan led the Singing. Wheels of Jim Blackburn, Bob Savage and Jim Young as we all sang America and Smile. Don Ludwig accompanied us as we sang, and continued to entertain us with his piano wizardry as we prepared for lunch. Jim Young gave the Thought for the Day and said, among other things, that if we can get through the day without pills, without aches and pains, have no tension without medication, overlook when people say bad things about us, and sleep soundly, then actually, we are dogs! He continued with the thought that we should be thankful for the time we spend together in Rotary where we get food, love and fellowship.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians: Rick Price invited Rotarians to introduce their guests: Dr. Dick Hopping (Dr. Lynn Marran), Bob Savage (Lyman Otley). Our visiting Rotarian was Harry Kremem from La Habra Rotary.

Rotarian of the Week: Two Rotarians were recognized this week: Carl Camp for 5/15/02 and Jo Ann Brannock for this week. Congratulations to both, and thanks for your good work!

Question of the Week:
How many U.S.A. capitals are there located west of Los Angeles and name them? A high school guest won the raffle, but did not know that there are 6. I don't think many of the rest of us knew, either!

Recognition:
Finemaster Dr.Jim Blackburn recognized the birthdays of Bill Schenk (5/19), Dale Schumacher (5/24), Carl Camp (5/25), and Amy Kluth (5/28). Birthdays were recognized for the spouses of Damon Dragos and John Kunau. Jim told of his wife's plan for them to help continue to enjoy their union. They dine, have wine, and have good conversation twice a week. She goes on Tuesdays and he goes on Thursdays.

Program:
Chris Hunt told about the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp program. It is a three day camp held in Idyllwild and led by Mike Darnold from Capistrano. Rotarians are Team Assistants and are matched with eight students to form a family of ten. The Rotarians are facilitators and not the leaders. Many tasks and contests are presented to the teams or families to solve that bring out leadership skills. Chris introduced seven students who are in their junior year at Fullerton and Sunny Hills High Schools. Each shared their encounters and related that they had unforgettable memories and experiences that helped them develop leadership and communication skills, and they learned to work together to overcome obstacles. The presentation culminated with one of the students engaging Chief Pat McKinley, Mike Oates and Jim Thompson in a snort off contest. Jim's snorting won!

Closing:
Fullerton High School senior trumpeter Aaron Braunstein led us into the Memorial Day weekend with a rendition of "Taps."

President Bill announced that Walt Ziegler was memorialized last Sunday at an event titled "Rotary: Celebrating Lives of Service."
