PROGRAM: JOHN COIL'S lucid presentation on the "whats and whys" of the damage and destruction to the World Trade Center Buildings held the Rotarians in rapture. The area is in a part of Lower Manhattan which is largely fill, above rock which is 80' below level. A special frame design with a "side curtain" covering 110 stories high, 10,000,000 square feet of office space, was built between 1966 and 1973. It cost $500,000,000 and a part of the Port Authority of New York City and New Jersey. It was the brainchild of Robert Moses, a pioneer in the modern history of New york City building . Mr. Coil happened to be watching when the second tower was hit, and simply could not believe the towers would collapse. Much of the reason for the collapse was due to the failure of the cross beam trusses which were clipped to the outside frame structure. When the clips failed, the floors cascaded in an accelerated aggregate of weight. No one predicted that heat from an fuel fire from an airplane would be a potentrial hazard.
