It was annual Rotarian Substitute Day. ERSATZ President ( President -elect) Mike Oates opened the meeting on time, and Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ed Little. Ray, Jims x2 and Bob led the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "Smile". Prez elect Oates tickled the ivories, since Sandy Fryling was delayed. Irish music was played after the arrival of the late Ms Fryling.

Dr. Mike Escalante built a thought for the day around gratitude of the successful passage of the various education bond issues and the impact that education has upon the community. Even the campaigning via telephone for the bond issue had an unanticipated, but clearly positive result, i.e. a least one recovering alcoholic was helped to continue his potentially fragile sobriety.

Rotarian of the Week: Ray Ashcroft

Guests:ad infinitum:
Mark Zane ably and with grace introduced a host of guests (Is that an oxymoron?) These included: Drew Napolin (Winston Creel), Bobbi Robinson (Fryling), Kathy Franz (Escalante), Eduardo Reyna, David Welch and Jerry O'Brien (Kawase), Paul Thompson (David Schoen), Al "T" Tetreault (Jana Bogart), Jim McKamy (Wally Bartelt), Rob Webb and Stephanie Vogel (John Phelps), Howard Wood (President Bill)

The World's Newest Rotarian: Dick Mathewson and Ray Hansen collaborated with Mike Oates to induct Dick Glaus into the Club. Dick is in the automotive business and is a former Rotarian for the Bell club.

Recognition:
Recognized for Spousal B'days were Scott Dowds, the recovering Jon West and the perfectly healthy PDG Jim Young. Keith Mills celebrated his 66th B'day, and Jim Blackburn recognized the 8th anniversary of Martha Hayes Blackburn and the aforementioned.

Les Christensen was recognized for his 50th year in Rotary and made a handsome contribution to the Rotary Room at the Pollak Library at CSUF.

Professorial Presidents: Phil Silverman had the winning ticket and correctly identified Jim Young as the only president to have earned a Ph.D. This was actually the correct answer to the wrong question, but Dr. Peloquin left faulty instructions for his stand -in. The answer to the right question would have been Woodrow Wilson.

Titan Baseball: Coach George Horton was the speaker for today. Coach is in his 7th year as head coach, and has won just over 70% of the nearly 300 games played during his tenure, a remarkable achievement against some of the toughest opponents in the nation. George spoke of the joys and chores of being a coach and credited his assistants for their contribution in recruiting and on the field. Among the issues he addressed were: recruiting before and after the annual draft, the impact of summer leagues and attractiveness of athletes as citizens and employees. Coach Horton also mentioned the generous spirit of former Titans, who currently are major league players (Phil Nevin, Mark Kotsay, etc.) and transition from college to pro ball, e.g. the wooden bat and the travel in the minors. Several learned questions were asked and expertly answered.
