DISTRICT 5320 ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST

Ably planned and directed by Assistant District Governor Owen Dean
four finalists from District Rotary Clubs showed their elocutionary prowess before a professional panel of Speech judges

Before asking the brethren and sistren to recite the Pledge, Carl Wilkins pointed out that Afghans were giving salutes to "Old Glory" in appreciation for the role of the United States in Afghanistan.

Singers for "God Bless America" and "Smiles" , in absence of Jim Blackburn , were drafted from the audience. Ray Ashcroft, Jim Young, PREZ Peloquin with Bob Savage arriving with a la Savage entrechat, got the chorus going.

Ken Kaisch rendered the Mini-Sermon of the Day about the need for gratitude in our every day dealings with children. A vague reference to Allyn Lean's high school daughter Amanda's not knowing where her parents were was food for thought unspecified.

Mik Oates was in a pianoforte nostalgic movie mood with luncheon music featuring hits from "A Man and a Woman" and "More". He's really hitting his stride! BZ, MIKE!

THE SPEECH CONTEST. Originated years ago by Rotary Club of Fullerton Jim Young, the program has been a growing success.Winner of our today's event will compete Region wide on April 6 against 13 contestants. Each contestant's speech must be within 4 and 4.5 minutes on the topic " Mankind is Our Business", the 2002 Rotary slogan. Judging by speech professionals JACKIE DANIELS, DR. JOHN KAMMERER, LEE CUMMINGS, JIM HOLDER and SUE PIKE will be on content, delivery, language, and speech manners.

DALE MORRISON, ( FUHS senior; born in Jamacia; moved to California from NYC; plans to join the Navy for nuclear power training)
"No man is an island. Ask not what your country can do for you. Teach others with less advantage. Give children in undeveloped countries a chance to excel.It is important that we help the less fortunate".

KACEY McCORMICK, ( Brea OlindaH.S. junior; active in drama).
"Mankind Is Our Business" seems like a simple statement. Christopher Columbus' life is a poor example to follow in living up to this creed. He was the antithesis of kindness in humanity. Greed, sexual assaults, and murder were his legacies. Humanity calls for peace, liberty and equality which are the hallmarks of Rotary".

PHI LUONG, (Santa Ana north H.S. junior; active in Drama and Key Club.)
"John Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath" is a model for putting the needs of the community above personal gain. Those characters put others above self. The September 11th showed Americans how to "Mankind is Our Business" The five rings of the Olympic Movement represents the interdependence of mankind".

AGUELLA BENEDDITTO, (Santa Ana H.S. junior);
"The homeless man is our problem as he represents the suffering of mankind. What can we do to help ? Be actrive in your community. 'Step out of the box'. The business of ONE becomes the business of OTHERS. We should not wait to assume leadership."

The judges voted DALE MORRISON as the winner.Cash prizes were awarded to all contestants. The presence of such a large continent from the high school staff was noteworthy and appreciated by the Rotary Club of Fullerton. Jim Young closed the program by pointing out the CSUF Rotary Room is, like this speech program, aimed at bringing Rotary closer to education and students.
