Zoot Velasco welcomed everyone to Rotary today.
Leslie McCarthy provided today's ins invocation. Dan Kiernan provided our patriotic moment and Ken Kaisch provided our moment of peace.
Zoot reminded everyone about today's duck race and thanked today's greeters, ly Berryman, Leslie McCarthy, and Monica Fernandez. Zoot recognized our guests today that included Kerry Phelps, Wilma Peloquin, and Beth Jahncke. Announcements today included a reminder of the upcoming golf tournament and raffle tickets benefiting the Friends of Fullerton College Foundation.
Jim Williams announced with a heavy heart the passing of Dick Mathewson. Dick has been a member of our club for over 30 years. Also, please send your best wishes to Farrell Hirsch as his father passed away recently. Zoot then asked everyone to raise their glass in honor of Dick Mathewson. Leslie McCarthy asked everyone to sign up for our upcoming club Halloween Party on Wednesday, October 27th to be held at the Twisted Vine in downtown Fullerton at 5 pm. Costumes are optional though we will be having a contest based upon the scariest, insanely stupid, gruesome, politically incorrect, and for the most unrecognizable. There will be no Rotary lunch meeting on the 27th. Joe Lins will be the MC for the night. Now on to the duck race, won by Leslie McCarthy. Zoot then gave away one of his ambassador chip to Beverly Berryman in recognition of her work faithfully checking in our members at each meeting. Today's song master duties went to Zoot Velasco, who led us in a karaoke version of the Monster Mash.
Scott Dowds was our recognition master today. Scott immediately fined Bill Mathy for his scheduling fumble regarding the assignments of the recognition masters. Scott asked for anyone having a birthday or anniversary this week. Rick Crane is having a birthday. Scott then fined everyone who had gone on a vacation in the past month that included Leslie McCarthy, Jim Williams, Bob Muschek, Howard Minkley, Thad Sanford, and Bill Peloquin. Scott also recognized Dan Ouweleen for his marketing work for Rotary.
Our guest speaker today is our very own, John Phelps. John asked for a count of everyone who survived his last craft talk. He gave a quick overview of his past talk and why he uses the phrase "who cares" and the story about the Red Dog saloon in Juno Alaska. Today is a follow-up to his last talk. John decided to retire last year after a tumultuous business year in 2020. His new motto is now "I care" and and plans to spend more time working with his favorite non-profits. He now has the time to care and to catch up on what goes on with the support of our Rotary clubs' various projects. John is hoping to help increase the funding of our own Rotary Foundation, so we don't hat have to focus so much time and effort on fundraising. John encouraged our members to remember our foundation in their estate plans. John plans to do the same as it will make a difference to our community well into the future. John explained that the Fullerton Rotary Foundation is a separate entity from the club, with the sole purpose of financially supporting the clubs' charitable projects. John also explained that the Fullerton Rotary Foundation is also a separate entity for the Rotary International Foundation, which we all contribute to in our club dues. Dan Ouweleen joined John at the podium with a slide show of the various details of the Fullerton Rotary Foundation. Zoot thanked John and Dan for their presentations and adjourned today's meeting.
