Dan Ouweleen brought the meeting to order at 12:30.
Judy Atwell led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by an excellent Invocation by
Laura Macias.
Griff Duncan was the song leader today and put the membership through its paces with
“My Country Tis of Thee” and our traditional “
Smile.” We had several guests and proposed new members with us today, including Tim Howells, Travis McShane, Jim Ripley,
Janette Pyun (from RYPEN), Adam England (from the Anaheim Rotary Club), Nancy Hansen (the lovely wife of Ray Hansen), Elinda Vasquez, and Joshua Ramirez (from the Corona Rotary Club).
Dan Ouweleen then walked the club through a preview of our new website which will be launched tonight. Bob Jahncke will be maintaining the members only information on the site, and members are urged to forward any high resolution photos they may have of our past events to either Bob or Dan. While we have several photos, many of them are grainy when enlarged for the website. Also, if any members have business links that they would like added to the website let Dan or Bob know. The preview of the website was followed by the raffle. Judy Atwell had the golden ticket but the prize owl eluded her.
Announcements included reminding the membership that there will be a RYPEN social at Marty Burbank’s home this Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 (barbecue, swimming pool and great company). Our club members are invited. Members were also urged to contribute to the Foundation for the Community Investment Awards. Bill Schenk informed the membership that “we are this close” (thumb and forefinger 1½” apart) to no longer having to listen to him pitch the End Polio Angels’ game this September 10. The evening will begin with a chili cook-off in the parking lot and a widescreen tv. Raco Raco urged members to volunteer for the Jog-a-Thon. We need more volunteers to help us reach out to schools on their Back to School nights. Jog-a-Thon will be October 22 at the Fullerton High School stadium. Bill Goetsch announced that his business has acquired one of the largest printing presses in the world. Members are invited to stop by and see it in action.
Howard Minkley was the recognition master today. Lee Brockett was recognized for his upcoming birthday. Greg Hickman has a wedding anniversary, as does Dan Ouweleen. Recognition concluded with a trivia contest table-by-table about the Olympics, Although members desperately tried to access the internet on their phones, few were able come up with the exact answers to the questions (what two new sports were added this year, what do the colors on the Olympic flag represent, what number is this Olympics, etc.). However, Howard Minkley was merciful if the answers were close, and most tables didn’t get fined.
Our speaker today was Ed Hart, the head of the CSUF Center for Family Business and co-founder of the Hart Leadership Foundation. Founded in 1965, the Center for Family Business is the premier educational resource for family businesses throughout southern California. Surprisingly, 70% of the businesses in our country are family businesses. Also surprisingly, 70% of those businesses do not successfully pass from the first generation to the second. The major reasons are no qualified or interested successor, poor planning, or no use of outside advisors. What Ed’s Center does is educate and develop, connect those with needs to those with solutions, honor leaders, build networks, and do research and share information. The Hart Foundation that he and his wife created is dedicated to honoring and recognizing current business leaders. The members appreciated his engaging and informative talk.
