Prior to the meeting, Bill Schenk entertained the club with pictures of military men and women from his prior Veterans Day program. Some pictures were from the Civil War and maybe earlier.

Dan Ouweleen started the meeting with some information about the date August 10. In 1776, the British leaders found out that the “Colonies” had published their “Declaration of Independence” on July 4. No e-mail at that time. Also on August 10, in 1921 Franklin Roosevelt contracted Polio and Jack Nicklaus won the PGA tournament in 1980. Dan requested that Rotary members sign up to be helpers at the Jog-A-Thon on October 22nd. More members are needed to make this event a success.

Andre Fahie led the flag salute. Jim Williams gave a moving invocation that a person’s attitude depends on his gratitude for blessings. Jim indicated that this date was his 30th year in Rotary. Congratulations Jim. You have been a “main man” in our Rotary Club for years.

Jay Kremer introduced visitors, Gary Wodery of the Long beach Club, Jim Ripley a prospective member and a guest of Rick Crane, Travis McShane, a prospective member and a guest of Carl Camp, and Harold Sullivan, a guest of Minard Duncan.

Bill Schenk announced that the annual Rotary day at the Angels will be September 10. Gary Wodery of the Long Beach Club said that a major chili cook-off for Rotary Clubs will be held under the Big A in the Angels parking lot prior to the game. The cook-off winner will be awarded a large trophy. Also, there will be a large TV available so that Rotarians and their guests can stay in the parking lot and eat chili and watch the Angels win (?). Live music provided by a rock and roll band will also entertain the Rotarians.

Terri Grassi told us that Bob Radde is now home from the recovery home and would like to get your cards or phone calls. Also, J Richey is at home recovering from an operation so cards and phone calls are appropriate to wish him well. Pat McKinley said that Dr. Dick Jones is also home from the hospital after a gall bladder and other operations. Pat said that Dick is more comfortable being the operator that the operatee. Bob Jahncke mentioned that a long time member who has not attended meetings recently, Dennis Ullrich, had passed away recently.

The Rotary Raffle was held and Griff Duncan won the raffle but lost the “owl” pick so the money rolls over to next week.

Bill Schenk was the recognition master and imitated Joe Lins with a bow tie but his tie had flashing lights. Ron Stock’s wife had a birthday, Bill Klinghoffer and his wife Jean had their 17th anniversary, Chris Meyer and his wife had their 24th anniversary, Lee Myhre has a birthday and Jim Williams celebrates his 30th year with Fullerton Rotary.

Ross Meador was the speaker today and gave a very moving story of his work to help Vietnamese children during the war with Vietnam. During the war he worked with other agencies like Catholic nuns to provide health care and homes for hundreds of orphans. He was instrumental in allowing some 600+ children to be adopted into American families during the war. His pictures of terrible conditions for orphan children in Vietnam created support for his efforts. As the Communist soldiers entered Saigon he was instrumental in getting a plane load of children safely away. He and a few of his children were ones saved by helicopter from the roof of the American Embassy in Saigon. A few of the children helped were the result of relations with American soldiers but the large majority were abandoned Vietnamese children.

Dan Ouweleen thanked the visitors for coming and reiterated his request for more helpers at the Jog-A-Thon on October 22 at Fullerton High School.
