Volume 75 Issue 47Rota-Scribe: Joe Arnold

Captain Dick Daybell had launched the meeting at 12:30 when a minor mutiny in the figure of a Safety Officer, Kim Barlow, almost put the Good Ship Rotary aground. Following her announcement about our End of Cruise event at 6:00 p.m. on June 29, our President artfully tacked slightly either to the left or right (depending on your political inclination) and smoothly corrected the course of the meeting by having Bob Kennedy lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Les McCarthy provided us with the Invocation, and Griff Duncan coaxed four lines from “Columbia, Gem of the Ocean” from the willing, if tentative, membership, followed by a rousing chorus of “Smile.” Dan Ouleween then introduced several members of the CSUF Rotoract with us today, including their President, Christian, and Tar, the founder of the CSUF Rotoract.

As is apparently our custom on the third Wednesday in June, Dick Daybell then launched an airborne distribution of Cracker Jack and peanut bags to selected members (Rick Crane, Larry Bennett and Kim Barlow). The purpose of this quaint custom was revealed to us by Bill Schenk announcing that the Rotary “End Polio Now” Angels’ game will be at the stadium in Anaheim on Saturday, September 10. Pastor Greg Hickman let the membership know that CLC will be hosting a Father’s Day breakfast at 9:00 a.m. with a special guest choir and band on Sunday, June 19. If you don’t have other plans, please join them and have the opportunity to see the fine work that Rotary did at their facility on Love Fullerton Day. Larry Bennett, Scout Master extraordinaire, announced that Boy Scout Troop 93 is celebrating its 93rd anniversary with a 222-mile, 21-day hike through the John Muir Trail. Their goal is to use the hike to raise funds for the JOYA Scholars. Flyers for those who would like to contribute to the cause were distributed at the tables. Dan Ouleween regaled the club with Rotary flags he acquired on his recent trip. He also announced to the membership that we will be posting the Rotary budget for next year on-line at our website. Summary sheets of the budget were distributed at the tables. Andre Fahie reported on his recent success at local elementary schools recruiting new members the Boy Scouts. Mike Williams announced that RYPEN will be holding their major fundraiser at the Muckenthaler on June 26 from 12 to 4. Admission is free. This will also be Zoot Velasco’s last day at the Muckenthaler. Half of the funds raised will be given to the Muckenthaler, with the other half going to projects in local elementary schools. Les McCarthy was asked to come up and draw the winning raffle ticket. As it happened, Frances Hunter had the ticket, and to everyone’s delight drew the blue chip and won the kitty! In an unexpected and moving moment, Dick Daybell announced that as he had sold the “Frisky Miss” he was making a donation of $10,000 to the Fullerton Rotary Foundation. The membership rose to give him a well-deserved standing ovation for his kindness and generosity.

Today’s Recognition Master was Les McCarthy. She began by drawing out from Scott Dowds the humble admission that he was being honored this evening with an award from the Chamber of Commerce—the Hawkins Business Leadership Award. Ray Hansen was then regaled by the membership with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday.” Warren Wimer was congratulated on his Trifecta this week—his 42 years of Rotary membership, his 55th anniversary, and his 77th birthday on June 20. Pat McKinley was congratulated on his 75th birthday. Scott Dowds was recognized for his Rotary anniversary, and Marilyn Richards was recognized on the occasion of her husband’s birthday. Following the Recognitions, Kim Barlow conducted a spirited auction of four premiere Angel tickets (a few rows up on the third-base line, a $400 value). Jay Kremer succeeded in securing the winning bid.

Congratulation to our Our Newet PHF Fellow!!!!

Dan Ouweleen then conducted the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, with the assistance of Kimberly Nguyen. Dan provided a bit of history and an overview about the Paul Harris Fellows. Over a dozen individuals were honored today as Paul Harris Fellows, and pins and certificates were distributed accordingly. They were: Miko Krisvoy, Mike Cochran, Marilyn Richards, Lynette Geiss, Kathleen Schneider, Duane Greenleaf, David Slomovic, Clare McKenna, Bob Muschek, Andre Fahie, Collen Townsend-Duncan, Amanda Nguyen and Tarlochan Rakhra. A standing ovation was given and the appropriate photo-ops occurred.

The balance of the meeting was an overview provided by in-coming President, Dan Ouweleen, of the proposed Fullerton Rotary Membership Flex Plans. Rotary International is encouraging clubs to introduce flexible membership plans. This is due to several reasons: members are asking for flexible plans; the need to attract busy professionals; keep members who are interested in the community but are now working outside the community; and, the need to attract younger members. In addition, basic costs have gone up. Dan also noted that since we are moving away from the Collage Concert, member dues will include a quarterly assessment for a planned Fellowship Fundraising Evening in the spring. We are proposing to adopt the flexible plans for a year and assess the affect at the end of that period of time. Members will be asked to make a decision about their flex plans by the end of the month. Dan distributed a chart outlining the various categories. They included: Young Member (18-39); Associate Rotarian (working professionals who live 15 or more miles away); Corporate Membership (Silver)—that will allow businesses or corporations to send a representative; Corporate Membership (Gold); New Rotarian (a 26-meal membership for new members); Active Rotarian; Attendance Excused; and, Honorary Rotarian. There is also some thought of allowing members who have missed four meetings to have the opportunity to bring a guest for free to one meeting. Following a few questions, Bob Sattler was asked to lead the membership in the 4-Way Test. Meeting adjourned.
