Volume 75 Issue 46 Rota-Scribe: Jay Kremer

Dick Daybell opened the meeting with a loud gong on the Rotary bell. Joe Lins immediately tried to blow a whistle (but was more of a wheeze) to stop the proceedings. Joe, as ship safety officer, reminded all Rotarians of the need to be at the Demotion night event on June 29 at the Elks club at 6:00 pm. Dick Daybell then welcomed Rotarians who had not been consistently to meetings for some time, Bob Bean and Carolyn Tormey. Elk’s club supervisor Irene was thanked for her good work in welcoming Rotary to the Elks Club.

Pat McKinley did the flag pledge, Theresa Harvey led the singing of the “Smiles” song twice in lieu of another song but the second “Smiles” verse got lost.

Guests welcomed by Zoot Velasco included Glynnes Pruell, president of the Fullerton Rotary Rypen Club. Cheryl Scaglione and Lauralyn Escher were part of the program presentation. Christian Angel and Kyle Pendergast were visitors from the Cal-State Fullerton Rotaract club. Laura Macias, a recent speaker, is now interested in joining our club and is sponsored by Minard Duncan.

Glynnes Pruell urged club members to attend a fund raiser at the Muckenthaler on June 26 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm. There will be live music, food booths, craft beer and lots of activities. Proceeds to benefit both the Rypen Club and the Muckenthaler. No cost to attend.

Incoming President Dan Ouweleen thanked the club for sponsoring his trip to the International Rotary convention in Korea. He was very impressed with the activities and recommended that club members attend the next annual meeting in June, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Larry Bennett and Scott Dowds and many Fullerton Rotary workers were thanked for the successful Rotary Cares event at Richman School last Saturday. Several free services such as vision screening, dental help, mammogram reviews and general health check-ups were performed by many committed health workers.

Theresa Harvey representing the excellent Fullerton Community Band reminded all that the traditional July 4th band concert will be at the Fullerton College quad on Saturday July 2nd at 6:00 pm. Come and enjoy free and excellent patriotic music.

Scott Dowds honored Cathy Gach, Minard Duncan and Marty Burbank for their presentation of honorary plaques to top graduating students at the three local junior high schools. Scott was thankful that photos of the Rotarians making the presentations were taken this year.

Susan Smith got the winning opportunity drawing ticket but failed to win the prize.

Zoot Velasco was the Recognition Master for the last time prior to his trip to his new job in Bakersfield. He vowed to take revenge on Fullerton Rotary members. Dan Kiernan and Minard Duncan were fined as they were reported to have exceeded the fine limit of $5 when they fined Zoot previously. Fined members included Dick Daybell for a spousal birthday, Ray Hansen for his 88th birthday, Bill Mathy for bringing Ray Hansen to the meeting and Don Ludwig for many years for piano playing. Phil Silverman for 24 years, Jim Blake for 32 years and John Christensen for 24 years as Rotarians. Diane Masseth-Jones was recognized for a strange combination of black and white striped pants and red tennis shoes. Andre Fahie fined for strange meal selection of totally pasta, Chief Pat McKinley for his sessions with health difficulties, Jay Kremer for failing to remember Zoot’s last name at the check-in table. Brett Ackerman was singled out for wishing to stop the songs sung at the start of Rotary meetings. On taking a hands up vote, only Brett and two others wanted the songs stopped. No Contest.

The program was a description of the excellent work done by an organization called Global African Village. This group’s work as described by Lauralyn Escher includes many improvements in living conditions for a small, poor African Village in eastern Uganda. Physical improvements include school construction, latrine buildings, health assistance, improved water supplies, economic assistance, generators for night lighting, equipment for improved birthing of children, sandals for natives without shoes and many other fine projects to help the natives. The group of three persons are all volunteers and not paid. If anyone wishes to donate, the e-mail address is: Globalafricanvillage@gmail.com.
