Volume 71, Issue 47 Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

After a lovely piano concert from Deacon Jay Milam, President Scott asked Randy McFarland to give the invocation and Warren Wimer to lead the Pledge.

Kim Barlow prefaced the singing with the rational behind why the Navy always sings the second verse first when the Navy theme song is rendered. SMILE was, as always our finale song and members greeted one another as they sang.

Frank Kawase introduced visitors that included RYLA students from Sunny Hills High School as well as from Fullerton High School; Bob’s dad Clayton Hillhouse has visited so long he needs a name badge; Frank had a guest himself and introduced Stanley Cha (local HR Block Franchisee); and Duane Greenleaf hosted his partner Collette Coffman from Colette’s Catering.

President Scott’s efforts to organize the announcement segment of the meeting seems to be paying off. Scott announced that sign-ups are needed for the Fullerton Cares event on June 9th and June 16th. Volunteers and participants are also needed for the District Hospitality Suite at the District Conference in Long Beach (the Hilton on Ocean Blvd. in Downtown Long Beach). A splendid time is guaranteed or all. President Scott then held an election and it was acclaimed that Jim Vanderburg would be our designated representative on the RI nominations committee for a future RI President.

Dan O announced that there will be a very important Jog-a-thon committee meeting this Friday at Pac-Min.

Jimmy Williams announced the sign-up sheet for the June 27th Demotion Night festivities to be held at the Muck is available. An accurate count is needed for Collette’s.

Dan Kiernan was the Finemaster today and nearly everybody was affected by his effort. John Phelps was recognized for Kerry’s birthday and the impending birth of their new grandson. Frank Kawase was also recognized for Joan’s birthday. Pat McKinley was recognized for his anniversary. Bill Klinghoffer is celebrating his 78th birthday, Bob Maxwell his 77th birthday, and Jim Young celebrated his 91st birthday at the meeting by donating $500 to the jog-a-thon!

Several members were fined for photographs found on Facebook, including Joe Lins and Pat Hartnett. Matt Apodaca was fined for getting engaged and setting a date. Terri Grassi was fined for not setting a date yet! Ken Kaisch was fined for calling Dan Kiernan a tool, but he didn’t specify which tool. Dan fined President Scott for violating an obscure Bi-law that forbids being rude to Dan, Recognitions deteriorated from there.

Kelly Chaplin had the winning ticket and had to guess which event really happened and which event was false. Her choices were:

1) The Catlin’s recently won a dance contest and Buck was so excited that he drove all the way home to tell his neighbors and left Bobbi in the lobby of the Phoenix Club.

2) Allyn Lean booked a flight from the local Fighter-town franchise and bombed Steve Awh’s Airport Diner with four flats of fresh strawberries.

3) Don Bankhead was working late at night placing campaign signs on Camino del Sol and he found Bob Radde sleep walking in his USC PJ’s riding a lawn mower and mowing down his neighbors tomato plants. He helped Bob back into his house and Bob still denies the whole episode.

Kelly guessed none of the above when actually all are true. No money was awarded and the jackpot has grown to $27,050.00. Better luck next time.

Lee Brockett introduced students from Sunny Hills High School as well as Fullerton High School who each in turn told of their positive experiences at the recent RYLA camp. Each student thought they knew what they were in for and each student expressed their pleasant surprise and gratitude for Fullerton Rotary Clubs sponsorship.

Craft Talk

Thad Sandford

Today new member Thad Sanford told his life story (he was born at an early age!) in Alaska and grew up in Texas. Thad studied Engineering at Texas A&M and entered the Air Force. He continued his education there and earned a Masters and Doctorate in Aeronautical Engineering and was in the Air Force for 26 years. When Thad left the Air Force he began a career with Rockwell International and became Vice-President of Space Engineering, and oversaw development of Experimental Airplanes. Thad gave a brief slide presentation on many of the “X” planes he worked on and how they were instrumental in design of current planes and rockets.

After the usual Swine presentation Prez Scott quoted famous chess-master Wallace Swatkoski with these words to live by: Victory goes to the player who makes the next to the last mistake. (Can you dig it?)
