Princess of Fines and Brags:
Joyce Capelle cautiously approached the podium. She carefully took her first swing and asked the John Phelps doppelganger to pay a fine for celebrating his new grandson Ian’s birth, 7.5 pounds and 21.5 inches for a new the grandson. Zoot Velasco has been on vacation and just returned. Now normally vacations are not recognized, but as one fellow non-profit Exec to another in this down economic time she pondered how he could bask in South Carolina sun trading BS and drinking Sweet Tea. The record today must reflect in absence of soon to be demoted President Scott a fine for $5.00 for advertising in absentia. Anniversaries include Pat McKinley who rushed off to celebrate with Barbara. Jeff Hutchison was fined for his birthday. With true Rotary integrity he also asked to make good for $2.00, to include his Spousal birthday next week and 35 year anniversary next month. Inspite of his noble deed he was fined a total of $5.00 because no one recognized him under all his new facial hair. Bill Klinghofer frowned and grimaced hi ay in to a his $1.00 premium for birthday celebration yesterday and for whining because he was fined last week. It was increased to $2.00 because of audience objection to the low whining fine. Dick Daybell did have trouble getting up because of arthritis and not because of the finemaster. Because of that he was gently fined $2.00 for 51 wonderful years of marriage to Lois.

452767 – Bill Kincaid is taking Mr. Meyer for support in answering a weird sports question: What superstitious habit did Babe Ruth follow, wearing it under his hat and changing it every two innings? A cabbage leaf? For what reason? This author was aided in further research to find out that it was not superstition that prompted the wearing of the green leafy vegetable, but it was donned in an effort to keep him cooler in the summer months.
Program:
“My Grandfather’s War – The Battle of the Bulge” was presented to us by author Jessie Cozean. Noone warned him that he was going to have his lunch in front of us all. Public eating terrifies him, but he will enjoy speaking with us on this D-Day. His book is a story of his grandfather who was a prisoner of war after the Battle of the Bulge. The challenge to write a book like this was to get the portrayal of the period of time that this story was situated in portrayed correctly. Some brief excerpts from the book…His grandfather was shipped to the front lines and it was so cold that they had to sleep with their boots on to be able to keep them supple enough to wear for the battle. He was in a boxcar ride to prison camp was bombed by the Allies. At one stop a piss bucket dumped on guard and it was the last time they laughed until they were liberated from Stalag 9B. A total of 3000 American privates were interred (separated from officers). 350 men suspected for being “undesirables” were sent from 9B to a concentration camp. Cold and hunger were more enemies than the Germans. All coats were confiscated and they were issued ½ a horse blanket. Three armfuls of wood each night to last for one hour in the coldest part of the night and the men shared the horse blankets. 1 bowl of watery soup a day and a slice of black bread. Food dominated every conversation. Brought back a 1 line diary with entries like. Railyard bombed, cars bounced like matchboxes or one bowl soup-lousy. Went into camp on Christmas and liberated on Easter. Lost 60 pounds and guys sat on their hand on the ride home as it was too painful to sit on the wood seats. 23 when he was interred and same age as Jessie when he started discussing this with his grandson.
In lieu of the coveted pig – A wonderful clock was provided instead to Jessie for speaking with us.
