Volume 70, Issue 24 Rota-Scribe: Joe Lins

President J called the meeting to order at precisely 12:31.05.  Thank you to Deacon Jay for the wonderful Christmas music while we all strapped on the feedbag.  Speaking of feedbag, what a great luncheon prepared by Duane Greenleaf at Collette’s Catering consisting of a delightful Cesar Salad, Sautéed Spring Vegetables, Rice, Chicken in Mushroom Sauce and of course the Fruit at the end of the table.  The Three Layer Cake was absolutely scrumptious.

Past President Joyce Capelle led us in a reverent invocation starting off with a moment of silence in respect to Chet Schultz who passed away last week.

Next up was Bob, it might be my last meeting because I am retiring and moving out of state, Savage leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.  Afterward he performed his trademark click of the heals as he went back to his seat.

Randy Mc Farland pitch hit as song master for Griff Duncan upon whose arrival was delayed.  Pat Hartnet was busy shaking his car keys as Randy was asking Don Ludwig what key we were going to start out with “Deck the Halls”.  Next up was “Smile” and as I looked around the room the smiles were wall to wall!

Mr. Base, Rick Crane was placed in charge of welcoming our guests and visitors.  Ted Russell from the Placentia Club joined us, Ted is an Entomologist.  What’s that you say?  I don’t know, I had to read his sign in sheet to make sure the spelling was correct.  Mr. Rick Crane’s guest was Joe Felz, interim City Manager.  Don Bankhead proudly introduced his lovely Bride, Carol, after all it is her birthday and our song later proved just how bad we really can sing!  Yours truly, Joe Lins was so happy that his daughter Stephanie joined us for lunch.  Sandy Hayes introduced her guest, Eric Neilson, a local contractor related to club member David Neilson.

Next on the agenda is, of course, announcements:  Allyn Lean started off reminding us that we all are responsible for the purchase of two tickets to our Capstone Event on March 26, The Collage Concert and Benefit.  Tickets are $100 each and we are looking for another wonderful event in 2011.  Theresa Harvey pitched our annual family Christmas party next week.  Please RSVP so that we have enough food and seating for everyone.  If you would like your kids/grandkids to receive a gift from Santa make sure you drop one off, labeled, to Theresa at the Chamber office before Tuesday.  Jim Blake congratulated Pat McKinley on being elected to Council.  Doug Chaffe called off the recount after a few days with results continuing to go in favor of PatJim also updated us on the condition of Chuck Munson who is home after 14 days in the hospital and successful surgery.  He is anticipating a six week recovery and welcomes cards and letters, please no visitors yet.  Bob Radde had a program committee meeting Friday morning.  Mark McGee thanked Niko, Sandra, Judy, Debbie, Blake and everyone who chipped in to make our annual event at the Ebell Club a huge success.  Dan Kiernan stepped up to the mike and let us know that Bob Jahncke is recovering well after a full rotator cuff surgery earlier in the week.

Allrighty now, our Recognition Master this week was Captain Commandant Dick Daybell who stepped in for Scott Dowds who was supposed to be the guy, but called Dick to let him know he couldn’t make it but showed up anyway!  That little trick cost Scotty $5!  Fred Johnson had the opportunity to chide Jim Williams regarding the sanctions against USC as a result of the UCLA loss last week.  Fight On USC!!!  Dick wanted to know why Bill Mathey, who was in Chicago last week, hadn’t shaved.  The bearded look is ok on Bill, however, Gillette’s profit has diminished in the past few weeks as a result.  Congratulations to Mayor Dick Jones and outgoing City Manager Chris Meyer.  Last Friday our city was awarded $1,350,000 with more to come as the Gold Award for our transportation center.  Jim Blake was recognized for his 23 years on the Metropolitan Water Board, the largest in world.  Jim reminded us of the annual trip in October.  All past participants were fined $2.  All who had traveled to the Delta were also recognized, however, no fine was assessed on them!  Good Job JimTom Meyer was also recognized for his Alum loss to Fresno Bulldogs in football.  Mark McGee was recognized again for a job well done last week and somehow Bob Maxwell was fined for his great job in assisting the decorating of the Ebell Club last week.  Bob Savage was assessed $5 for leaving the state for old time sake.  Don Bankhead had the pleasure of letting us know that today was Carol’s birthday, so of course we all sang a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to CarolVern Andrews is celebrating his 81st birthday on the 16th and Jay and Gloria Kremer are celebrating 54 years of marital bliss.  Dick let Jay know that after 54 years no fine was necessary!  Griff Duncan is celebrating his 51st anniversary with Jan, well he was fined $1, mostly for being late.  He did get an impromptu “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” song out of everyone.  And that wraps this portion of the program.

Next on the agenda is the opportunity/knowledge drawing for ticket number 79034 to which no one responded.  The redraw number was 790224 and the winner was Birthday Boy Vern Andrews.  The question posed by Randy McFarland was;  Which President was named Time Magazine Man of the Year, twice?  Vern asked for assistance/life line from Councilman Pat McKinley.  They were unable to come forth with the right answer.  The correct answer is located toward the end of this report!

And now, the moment you have been waiting for, our program.  Deacon Jay was the program today where he shared with us his passion for United States Presidential History!  Deacon Jay started in the business world focused on World Banking.  After the death of his spouse he changed professions and went to work for God, full time.  The Deacon has one daughter, Catherine and he presides over Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and Vigils.  He thoroughly enjoys preaching, marriage prep and counseling.  He is the Spiritual Moderator for St. Vincent de Paul Society, Chaplain for the knights of Columbus Council, Department Chaplain for the Fullerton Police Department and a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council.  Deacon Jay’s favorite quote is;  “Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same.”  Jay gave a wonderful history lesson on each President and a quick sentence about each one.  I’ll bet you didn’t know that President Garfield could write with both hands at the same time, Greek in the left hand and Latin with the right hand!  Just one little tidbit of information from our topic today.  Nice Job Jay!

ANSWER TO OUR DRAWING……………..President Reagan

President J. closed the meeting at 1:23.47 with the following quote:     “Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul.  Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”
