Volume 68, Issue 48 Rota-Scribe: Joyce Capelle

Prez McKinley called the meeting to order in time, as usual. After presenting Kathy Allred with the coveted Fullerton PD mug, she lead is the pledge. Deacon Jay, the “spiritual auditor” then provided the invocation. Griff Duncan led us in song and the club did an excellent job with Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory, followed by Smile.

J Richey called upon (Rotarians) to introduce their guests: John & Pat Pazgbycien (Dan Ouweleen); John Godlewski (Rick Crane); Jonathan Han (Daniel Kang); Judy Francher (George Giokaris); Jeremy Lins( Joe Lins), Bill McGarvey III (Bill McGarvey Jr.); Mary Ruth Ashcroft (Ray Ashcroft); Barbara McKinley (Pat McKinley); Ann Mills (Keith Mills). Welcome to all!

Rotary Annoucenments:

Rick Crane - The Club will meet OFF-SITE next week at the YMCA, June 17. The YMCA will be hosting our meeting so mark your calendars accordingly.

Jeff Hutchison – It’s time to dig deep to support the Club’s charitable projects. Please pick up a contribution form before you leave today.

Lesley McCarthy – All the volunteers who helped make the Top 100 dinners a success were recognized.

Tom Meyer – The Club will be dark at noon on June 24, meeting instead at 6:00PM to celebrate the “coveted” demotion of Pat McKinley. If you haven’t already RSVP’d, please do so ASAP!

Zoot Velasco took the mike to recognize the following:

Anniversaries are being celebrated this week by Pat McKinley, Lee Myhre, Daniel Kang, Dan Fisk. Gary Goodson, Bob Hillhouse, Chet Schultz, and Warren Wimer. Birthdays were recognized for Dean Heiser, Marty Burbank, Bill Klinghoffer, Carolyn Tormey, Ray Hansen, and Dick Daybell. Andy Anderson recognized himself for his birthday. Dick Daybell corrected the finemaster (never a wise move) stating that is was his wife’s birthday.  Whereupon Zoot took Bob Jahncke to task for an incorrect database (never a wise move, either). Correct spousal birthdays are: Lois Daybell, Pat Tormey, and Debbie Hutchison.

6/17 Away Meeting at Fullerton YMCA, 2000 Youth Way, Fullerton, BBQ Food by Colettes
6/24 Demotion Night for Pat McKinley at Meridian Sports Club - Tom Meyers - 6pm at the Meridian
Theresa Harvey was recognized for coordinating tonight’s Chamber dinner in which MG Disposal and the Muckenthaler are among the announced honorees. Bob Clark Jr. was fined $5 simply because he has successfully evaded Zoot’s fines until now. Minard Duncan, Fred Johnson, and Zoot Velasco are newly appointed members of the Fullerton Collaborative’s Board of Directors.   In a masterful turn of the tables, Fred Johnson could not identify “Please Send Me Someone to Love” performed by Percy Mayfield.

Raffle:

The lucky raffle ticket was held by Bob Hillhouse, who (with the help of Tom Meyer) correctly identified Jerry West as an MVP of a losing team. Bob scored $85 for that one.

A Note on Community Investment Awards for 2008-09

"On behalf of the Communiuty Investments Committee,  The Rotary Club  of  Fullerton Board of Directors, the Fullerton Rotary Foundation Board of Directors, and a new partner, the Orange County Community Foundation, we wish to share this year's  award recipients with you. There were 39 applicants, all of which received  various awards ranging from $500 to $1500. A total of $43,900 was distributed of which  55% to Youth, 35% to Community and 10% to Senior activities.  (Please see Attachment)

A listing of the applicants/recipients and  Rotarian sponsors is appended. The members of this committee formed a smooth working  team. They have a good "feel" for which activities will make  effective use of the grants in achieving the aims of Rotary and OCCF.

PROGRAM:

Ray Ashcroft had the pleasure of introducing Sue Evans, President-Elect of the Assistance League of Fullerton. Sue gave us the history of the Assistance League from the 1890’s to the present day. Their core values are Integrity, Leadership, Respect; Accountability; and Commitment. Nationwide, there are 24,000 volunteers in 118 chapters and guilds, providing 2.6 million hours of service benefitting 1.4 million individuals.

The Fullerton chapter has 80 active members, 101 sustaining members, 76 Assisteens, 27 Assistors, and 48 ALPHA members. Their projects include: La Vista High School (scholarships and support);  Meals on Wheels ( free office space and utilities); Operation School Bell (new clothing and supplies for children in need); Operation New Start (clothing and household items for women and children leaving abuse environments and clothing for homeless and others in need); Santa’s Closet (holiday help for families); and Vision Screening and Referrals

Sales from the Bargain Box provides 2/3 of the support they need for their projects. The rest comes from their annual fundraiser “A Taste of Fullerton”. The last event was “Diamonds and Denim”. ALPHA has a separate fundraiser: “A Day of Authors”.

Sue specifically thanked Ray and Mary Ruth Ashcroft for their tireless efforts on behalf of the League and also noted that Gloria Kremer (wife of Rotarian Jay) is incoming membership chair. Sue also acknowledged the help of the Rotary Club of Fullerton. The thanks are mutual, Sue, as the Rotary Club of Fullerton thanks the Assistance League for the wonderful work they do in the Fullerton community!

Chief Pat closed the meeting with a quote from Teddy Roosevelt.
