J Ritchey introduced Dr. Desai, our speaker from Newport/Balboa Rotary Club, who talked about Deafness In India. The Deafness program started in 1998 and had two main goals; prevention of deafness nationwide and measles and rubella vaccinations. The highest incidents of death by measles is in India - 150,000 people in that country  die of measles each year. In 2007, India developed a national program for the prevention and control of deafness.

Dr. Desai emphasized the importance of fellowship and friendship in Rotary International and told the story when he met four Boston Audiologists at a convention. They wanted to help. And help they did.

They trained 100 India health care workers on early hearing loss detection and intervention. The Audiologist also provided equipment for newborn hearing screening. And, they continue to support the program. What a great job they did!

Dr. Desei thanked our club for the support we have given.
