Volume 68, Issue 30 Rota-Scribe: Joe Lins

Prior to the meeting and during lunch we were thoroughly entertained by Deacon Jay as his fingers danced on the keys of the Rotary Piano.  Thanks Jay and keep it up, we appreciate your talents.

A few pre meeting presentations took place by our dynamic leader, President Chief PatBill Mathy received the “coveted, suitable for framing” Fullerton Police Department Shoulder Patch and Mug (coffee mug) for again being the consummate host, under the watchful eye of his loving wife, Robyn, of his annual Superbowl party.  Thanks Bill.

Diane Masseth-Jones was delighted to also receive the “coveted” shoulder patch and mug for the successful work she did organizing the speech contest for last weeks meeting.  Great job Diane!

Cathy Gach was awarded the Paul Harris Pin of the 4th Degree for her consistent gifts over the years.  You are a great example to all, Cathy.

A CALL TO ORDER

Meeting was called to order at precisely 12:29.04 by President Chief Pat McKinley.

FLAG SALUTE

Dr. (YWCA Man of the Year, 2008) led us in saluting the flag of our country.

SING A SONG

Accompanied on the piano by The Rotary Club Controller, Don Ludwig, the Honorable Leroy Fulton directed us in a lively rendition of “America” followed by the ever popular Rotary Anthem, Smile!

INVOCATION

Next up for our invocation, David Schoen citing our Bible while relating the readings to the current state of our country and the challenges we face spoke of the Power of Love and having no fear.

FOOD

Not to be missed in all the action, we enjoyed a luscious lunch of comfort food consisting of Salad, Mac & Cheese with baked/fried chicken.  Would have gone back for more if I didn’t have to write this edition of the Rotogram!

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

Kathy Allred was next on the agenda introducing our esteemed guests;

First, it was GREAT to see Walt Barnes in the back of the room giving a thumbs up and a big smile.  Charge On Walt!

Minard Duncan’s guest was Loren Doll who was also a part of the MOTAL presentation.  Ron Gillett from Fullerton Sunrise came in for an assumed “make up”.  Bill Gillespie from Fullerton South came by for a great lunch.  It must have been the chicken.  Daniel Kang brought back Ted Kim while Zoot let us know that his guest Duane Greenleaf was ready to join and we need to get him a new member packet.  Jim Williams, always prepared, handed Zoot the packet soon thereafter.  Don Landers joined us from far away Visalia (I didn’t know they had one) Downtown.  Jim Young also introduced a very long time friend whose wedding he was in, Mico Llanos.  And Bill Peloquin getting ready for next weeks Valentine program brought his much better half, Wilma.  She always receives a much heartier welcome than Bill!

RECOGNITION

Commodore Dick, Recognition Master, Daybell stepped to the microphone and immediately recognized Andy Anderson and Dave Bates for attending as it was good to see them.  No fine assessed.  Moving right along to Ken Kaisch and the lovely Julia for their anniversary, a few words were said, as expected, resulted in a $5 fine.  Next was Mike Oates who complained about being put in the same category as Ken, yet sharing the same table, mailed his Bride Elizabeth his anniversary card and was only fined $1.  Deborah Sanchez celebrated her birthday on 2/6 and that resulted in an additional $1 for the cause.  Bill Mathy, stand up!  A great Superbowl party, however, during the 3rd quarter an event (AKA fire) erupted on the hillside that went unnoticed by Chief McKinley.  A fine of $1 was levied, however, I know that Pat is to be undisturbed during a game as his full attention is always directed toward the field!  Wally Swatkowski wasn’t happy with our Recognition Master, after being slighted for his and Peggy’s 20th anniversary on 2/2 celebrated over a romantic dinner.  I am not sure what any of this had to do with Ground Hog day!  Back to the Mathy Superbowl party all who attended (most of the club) were ordered to stand and contribute $1 each.  There was additional discussion regarding the value of front row seats of which an additional assessment of $5 was added to all those who were in the front row.  Bill Kincaid rose at this point at let the man with the microphone know that he too celebrated his 82nd birthday on 2/3 of which a loud applause was heard and no fine applied.  One last item regarding that rowdy Mathy Superbowl party, Bob Radde was fined $3 for his bias against Pittsburg.

DRAWING

Ticket number 813263 was drawn and the lucky winner was Deborah Sanchez who appointed Tony (I always have a lovely woman in my arm) Amato to assist her in naming that 50’s song Fred Johnson picks for his antique record player.  Did they really get it right?  I might have heard some chatter from the audience, however, they did get the Perry Como song, “Hot Diggity Dog Ziggity Boom”.  Cool………

PROGRAM

On to the Program!  Our speaker was the Founder and Executive Director of the Museum of Teaching and Learning (MOTAL), Dr. Gretta Nagel, a passionate advocate to say the least.  The following were her speaking points preceded by the following joke:  Why was Cinderella such a bad basketball player?  A voice in the crowd let it be known that it was because the Chief was her coach, which drew a roar.  While that was good, the published answer is “that you would be too if you had a pumpkin for a coach”.  Ba Dump………….On to the speaking points of MOTAL.
