My Works - Entitled:

Thanksgiving in The Land of Rotary

Bill of Fare:         Traditional Thanksgiving feast complete with pumpkin pie with the whipping cream on the side for ample self service and capability to overflow the plate with the faticious sweet cream!

Called to Order at precisely 12:31.by Club President Chief Patrick Mc Kinley.

A healthy Wally Bartelt led us in a resounding Pledge of Allegiance to The United States of America Flag.

The Honorable Leroy Fulton accompanied by, Club Pianist Don Ludwig,  led an astounding version of “God Bless America” followed up with "Smile”

Our invocation/prayer was prepared and presented by the ever qualified Leroy Fulton, pulling double duty, thanking our Heavenly Father for all great things, Rotary and the wonderful things Rotary does, and the Founders of our Country who sought His guidance in forming our Country and giving us this day of many to be thankful for.

Guests

Daniel Kang had the job of introducing our guests on this day before Thanksgiving.

Jim Williams introduced his son Michael, who had the week off and was able to spend time with Dad at the Rotary lunch.

Joe Lins proudly proclaimed how excited his 15 year old son Casey, a friend of Rotary, was to have lunch with his friends as he had the day off school.  With Mom not around Casey was the recipient of a large amount of whipped cream completely covering the plate with a small piece of pumpkin pie lurking underneath…

At the same table was Bill Klinghoffer who was extremely happy to have his daughter, Jill Martin with him.  Bill seemed a little more quite during lunch while sporting a smile larger than usual.  I am pretty sure it was the company he had.

Last but not least there was a duo just waiting for the Master to stand and introduce his son.  Mr. Bill Mc Garvey stood up as we welcomed his well known son, Bill Mc Garvey III.  While I’m not sure how much whipping cream this lad had I do know that he too enjoys Rotary time with his Dad...

Recognition Master

Where is Chuck Munson?, I’ve got to know!!  So then our President Chief Pat called on Randy Mc Farland to do the task but then, Jim Williams realizing that Randy would have to do the recognizing and carry the net stepped up and took on the role/persona of the Feared Recognition Master.

Randy had the net and Jim had the mike and Chief Pat reminded Jim he wasn’t the program and the net was still empty so lets get a move on…

Tom Meyer and the lovely Linda celebrated 26 years of wonderful wedded togetherness.

Vimal Seth and Bride Rita (Vimal sponsored by Tom) were just a year short of Tom and Linda yet celebrated a big one, 25 years where Vimal declared how happy Rita was!

His Majesty, King Dean Stockwell and his online Bride, Jeanie celebrated their 8th year of wedded togetherness.

Dick and Jane, Mathewson celebrated their 24th anniversary at “Outback”  You could tell it was a great evening for Dick.

Claude Jones and the lovely lady Laurie celebrated another anniversary.  His answer to “what did he attribute his successful happy marriage?” without hesitation he piped up a resounding, “yes dear”.

Barbara Mc Kinley celebrated her birthday on Thanksgiving.  Pat asked Jim “how many” only to be reminded that we NEVER ask how old.  He stood up prepared reaching into his pocket removing the money clip all in the unison to be expected of our top cop.

Bob Engemann was sporting new G.Q. glasses.  He was very thankful of the gift as he couldn’t see out of the old ones anymore…Things that make you go hummm.

Moving on to the glassless Kathy Allred, so excited to have completed Lasik Surgery.  A long time ago she had RK surgery and was told that was the best it would get.  Passage of time does great things.

Blake, never been fined, Smith hit the jackpot with a $5 fine for 60 years of marriage with Irene way back in July.  Who missed that one???

And then Jim asked for all who had never been fined to stand whereas Larry Bennett paid the piper for his honesty.

Deidre Kinsey just stood up and threw up he arms and declared, “Just fine me”!  Job well impromptuely done by Master Jim Williams…

Moving Right Along - Drawing

Ticket Number 812545 which was purchased by Franki Berry…Who asked for the assistance of the very qualified, or so we all thought, Zoot Velasco.  The song was a tune from 1962 entiled Turkey Trot by Little Eva that went to number 3, yes unbelievable as it seems.  Anyway a $10 consolation prize from Winnie Houston.

Program

What I have to be thankful for

Leroy Fulton introduced our three Rotorians who prepared their speeches for the benefit of all.

Jeff Hutchison was the first to begin and started out reflecting on his Mom and how he had to place her in an assisted care facility and the past three years of taking care of his Dad.  He recognized how hard it is to see the big guy you always looked up to become dependant on him.  The economy is tough and he had just laid off a long time employee.  Two weeks later, feeling the stuff mentioned above, and Leroy calls again to ask that he share what he is thankful for with the Club.  He was blessed to say YES.  Jeff is thankful for, no big surprise, Rotary and the support he receives from our Club.  He has learned Faith, Humility, Patience, Family, Hope and Gratitude is what he is thankful for.

Jeff is most thankful for his wife Debbie.  His Mom taught him Faith and Hope.  Being a part of the Jim Shook Family is a big thing to Jeff and the mentorship Jim provided.  He thanked Warren Wimer and Dave Bates for not allowing him to resign 25 years ago.  He has celebrated 22 years of sobriety and learned that you can be a contractor and not drink.  Lastly he thanked Leroy for his persistence and how fortunate he is to have agreed to Leroy’s request.

Debbie Koff was up next and started out by saying how her life had been on a loop de loop the past few years.  She thought she would interview a few of the folks who live at Sunrise;

She asked Mable, a 97 year old woman what she was thankful for and Mable was happy to be awake and above ground this morning!

Mr. and Mrs. Jones, (I don’t make up the names) are a couple in their late 80’s or early 90’s and Debbie asked the same question.  Mr. Jones was happy for having a “hot” wife he could have his way with while Mrs. Jones was happy to have a husband who was still full of it!

Family time came next with her daughter at home last Sunday.  While sitting around the table her daughter came through with how thankful she was for her sister and brother and having the best Mom in the neighborhood.  Way to go Debbie.

Debbie was one of 3 kids raised by her father, a Captain who upon returning from the war declared his leadership by saying, I am the Captain and you three are the Privates.  Her father taught her a lot and one time in particular she was invited to Catilian, a white glove dance.  She did get the gloves, but her Dad was late and she went to the dance with her white gloves a not so well fitting sister’s dress and ran down to the dance only to see all the young men in suites and girls in their white dresses and patent leather shoes.  Needless to say, not a good first impression.

Dad came home and Debbie spent as long as it took to cry in his arms and declare that she would never go to school again, much less a dance.  Dad’s patience paid off and she went to school the next day and the next dance she had the best white dress, shoes and gloves.  Never mess with the formality that our military teaches its Officers.

Debbie also thanked Leroy for asking her to be a part of this special program, regardless of the situation there is always something to be thankful for.

          Bill Schenk is just a happy guy!  He is curious as to when 57 years of age came.  Bill seemed to have a few questions as to what is important to him;

Economy?  Not much he can do about that!

Weather, fire, floods, earthquakes or mudslides? “No, not much I can do about that either.” Says Bill.  “I don’t think I take too much for granted”.

Abraham Lincoln said it more than once, “You’re about as happy you make up your mind you want to be.”  He is thankful for his friends, upbeat Rotarians who teach him to be a better citizen.

Bill’s family is very important to him and how he will free his schedule to spend time when they are in town.  Grandchildren, what could be better?

Bill is most thankful of his wife Cathy.  Above all else their partnership reminds him that he has all he needs.

Bill also thanked Leroy for the opportunity to prepare for this holiday appropriately.

Ray Ashcroft stepped up to the podium and gave an impromptu thought about how a few years ago as a camp counselor, he was 17 so it was more than a few years, he looked up and as the sun shown through the trees it radiated the auburn color of a young 14 year old girls hair.  That girl, Mary Ruth, just happened to catch his eye.  Imagine that!  Sonny finally found his way to be invited over to this girls home, the address?  A mortuary, her father was a tall lean typical looking mortician.  As the father of a daughter, I laughed when Ray told us the question her father had for him.  What, no girls for you to date in your town?  Seven years later they married and the rest is history as they say.

Upon reflection of the past year Ray/Sonny thanked Rotary for the support they continue to give.  “The sudden loss of our son Mark is painful to say the least, but the continued support from Rotary has kept us going.  Thank You so much.  While going through those tough times, Rotarians will always be there for you.”

Back to President Chief Pat, who thanked Leroy for putting together such a great panel for the past at least 10 years.
