Bill Klinghofer
introduced the two Craft Talk Rotarians - Paul Simons and Zoot Velasco.
Paul Simons, a man of faith, was born on June 19 in Alhambra, CA. He has 2 bothers and 2 sisters. He married his wife, Mary, in 1953 and has 3 children and 8 grandchildren.

He worked for J.C.Penny's for many years starting as a stock boy and janitor and worked his way up to many high ranked postitions with the company. In 1973, he supervised 34 stores in an area 900 mile wide. Later, he became district manager of Orange County and part of Los Angeles County. He retired in 1989.

With his over 45 years of very successful service, he saw many odd and humorous incidents. One time a young worker was asked to get a car that was parked in the parking lot and drive it to the brake repair shop at the strore. The owner neglected to tell anyone that the car had no brakes. When the boy tried to steer the car into the brake stall, he could not stop and drove right through the building.

Paul has been involved in many voluntary positions such as President Elect of Arcadia Chamber of Commerce; President and Vice President of Whittier Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors of Long Beach and Monrovia Chambers of Commerce; Rotary member in Arcadia, Whittier, Long Beach; Red Cross Board member; Board member of Boys and Girls Club; and others. He was active for many years in Little League, Y Indian Guides and Bobby Sox. His civic involvement included Board member for the St. Jude Memorial Foundation; twice Chairman of the Fullerton Planning Commision; Vice Chair of Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Commision; Chair of Fullerton Parks and Recreation Commission; and President of the Fullerton High School Booster Club. He served on many committees while a member of the Brea United Methodist Church and the Fullerton Presbyterian Church. He has many personal stories he would like to share but time ran out.

Zoot Velasco has had an incredible life as his video - the "Many Faces of Zoot Velasco" showed. He was born on December 13, 1962. As a small baby, 80% of his body was burned which resulted in 300 surgeries and skin grafts. He had to wear braces on his leg for several years and was in and out of hospitals until he was 17 years old. He has no muscles in one foot and because of that his mother would not let him take dance lessons. He grew up in a black neighborhood and watched the kids break dancing and that inspired him to join in. In spite of the fact that he did not have professional dance lessons and he had no muscles in his foot, he started winning dance contests not only in break dancing but also in swing dancing. He became a professional and performed for 12 years touring with greats such as Lionel Hampton and Count Basie.
He has been a mime, snake rangler, camp counselor, live wax figure model and manaquin model, Charlie Chaplan impersonator, teacher in Los Angeles Arts School, Robo Cop for video commercials, played small parts in some movies, 1st Runner Up for Ronald McDonald, and much more.

He worked for several non-profits and found he really liked working with kids. He worked in juvenile halls and prisons. He ran a prison art program from the years of 1994-2000. He ran 4 cultural centers and was a Boys and Girls Club Director of Operations.
Unfortunately, not enough time was allowed for Zoot to fully present his craft talk as we would have learned much more about his incredible life. What a fantastic person!
