Volume 66, Issue 14 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

President Terri opened the "Bow Tie" meeting and dedicated it to Jack Hayes as a perennial supporter of this dashing fashion accessory. Fred Johnson led us in the Pledge, Howard Woods & a discordant Mike Oates tried to lead us in "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "Smile". Mark Geiss was inspired to tell jokes by Mike Oates, did a much better job and then led us in the invocation.

Guests presented by Joe Lins:

Rotarians visited us from all over this week. We had Howard Dutra and Steve Eldredge from Fullerton Sunrise, Andy Ersek from Orange North and our very ex-own, Dr. Jim Blackburn now to be found at Long Beach. Randy McFarland brought an ex-Rotarian from the East Coast, Ann Thorward. Jesus Leon was a guest of Leslie McCarthy’s and was most recently with Rotary in Berkeley. Other guests included Jim William’s better half, Sally and always welcome guest of Terri Grassi, Sandra Hayes.

Announcements:

Bow tie rental fee – will be going to support care packages for the troops – a signup sheet is being passed around if anyone would like to add to that amount. $20 will be billed to your account and you will really help bring some light to the troops serving overseas. Anyone interested who did not have a chance to donate, please see President Terri.

Updated rosters are available thanks to Bob Jahncke!

Drew Napolin found a well worn hat behind Zings this week. He sold it back to its rightful owner for $21 (Mike Oates, where did the blood come from?)

Visit to Ronald Reagan’s Library – is on track for October 14th. Meet at 10:15 a.m. at the Fullerton Community College Parking Structure (Corner of Lemon Street and Fullerton College Drive. Lunch will be provided. For reservations contact Jim McKamy at (714) 393-0606.

November 10th and 11th is the Christmas Express – the post office is providing special flat rate boxes to mail to the troops overseas. They would appreciate non-meltable candies, letters, hand wipes, snack foods that will transport well, and any comfort items, etc. Custom forms need to be completed and for more ideas on what to send see www.anysoldier.com.

Senior Christmas Party is December 13th – Mark McGee needs gifts, decorations and lots of help. Please call him to let him know what you are able to do to participate!

Lunch Line with Bow Ties

Jo Brannock added that the families of the troops overseas – are also in need. There are six families with military heads of household overseas who reside locally. They are in need of baby stuff, possibly a Holiday Meal you could share with them at your house. She is willing to provide free counseling. See Jo for further information.

October 20th is the Boys Club Auction and October 11th is the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast – as announced by Bob Clark, Jr.

Finemaster Nate Kvetny

Finemaster Nate Kvetny was very dapper in his purple lame tie. He declared October 4th to be “Honesty Day”. All Rotarians were requested to be completely forthright and under their own recognizance to confess their sins, ages and anniversaries for the week. What does it say for the integrity of our club in that we only had a total of three takers. Jimmy Williams argued with Nate because his tie was not wild enough, Ken Kaisch held up the front page of the Orange County Register showing him dead center. He fined his table $10 each for sitting with a celebrity. Kathy Goch was harassed about her spouse’s birthday and fined $63.00. Running through this whole discourse was Nate changing his tie to a black, white and magenta six foot bow, with the addition of a bowler hat and a checkered hat band. Nate, we have never seen you look better!
Program – Keith Mills provided is with an excellent discourse on the history of the modern tie. According to Keith, the history of the tie started in Croatia before the birth of Christ. Neck cloths are also to be found in the burial site of Emperor Shi Huang Ti on each of the life sized replicas of his personal guard. While each figure is unique, all 7,500 are wearing neck cloths. From his interesting support of the progression we segued to Joe Lins and were shown how to properly tie a bow. I do believe Reverend Hickman will be sporting one at his next service. We all need to be cognizant as to how to accomplish this feat as Dr. Blackburn pointed out “the only people who wear clip on bow ties are waiters in a fine dining establishment and those who are ambivalent about their sexuality.” It was also proposed that Fullerton become a 100% Bow Tie Rotary Club. Fortunately for all, that resolution did not pass.
Jim Blackburn proceeded to sell a Lid? Cap? We don’t know what it was, but it definitely was not a Hat! Primary bidders were Jim Blake and Walt Barnes. Congratulations to Jim, for at a cost of $225 he was able to take the contested Cover home with him!
Finally, J Richey helped President Terri award three prizes for the best bow tie of the day. Contestants were Chief Chippendale McKinley, Dr. Jones, Mr. Dunlap, Mr. Williams, Mr. McFarland and Mr. La. Winners were to be determined by the audience, but due to a complete lack of cooperation on the part of the membership, President Terri got to pick the winners. They were….
