Volume 66, Issue 15 | Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy |
President Terri opened our meeting this week by asking Chet Schultz to lead us in the Flag Salute. He was promptly followed by Howard Wood & Don Ludwig who tried to lead the Fullerton Rotary Choral Group in a rousing rendition of "Shine on Harvest Moon" and "Smile." Howard observed that we really did need to smile when we sang that song to increase goodwill and cheer within the group. Chief McKinley let us in on a little secret from a French philosopher, "Don't expect to receive judgement on the last day, judgement takes place every day," before leading us in our invocation. Guests: Guests were supposed to be announced by Chuck Munson, who passed the responsibility to Paul Dudley, who then abdicated to Griff Duncan, which took longer to plan than to introduce Rich Davis who is a guest of John Derry and Mark Schmidt, a fellow Rotarian from Villa Park. Aren't drafting and delegation wonderful organizational skills? Announcements: · October 14th – Ronald Reagan Library fellowship trip. Meet at 10:15 a.m. at the Fullerton Community College Parking Structure (Corner of Lemon Street and Fullerton College Drive). Lunch will be provided. For reservations contact Jim McKamy at (714) 393-0606 · November 10th and 11th is the Christmas Express – in the interest of accuracy a retraction must be made regarding the announcement in last week’s bulletin. The Christmas Express is a delightful fundraiser featuring appearances by Terri Grassi, Jim Williams and Theresa Harvey among other Rotarians on those nights. Reservations for this fun event are $40 and it will be held at 6:30 in the Wilshire Auditorium. · Senior Christmas Party is December 13th – Mark McGee needs gifts, decorations and lots of help. Tickets will be available for ½ price. He announced that a creative writing ad was being sent to Fullerton residents about both he and Ellen Ballard. While the author got the spelling of his name correct, the balance of the information looked a little fictional and a rebuttle to the ad was available on each table. For more information, please contact Minard. · A new committee is being formed in Fullerton Rotary. Its chair is Jim Lapak. It is an Ethics & Action Committee and will award a youth in our community for their outstanding (and ethical) commitments. Volunteers to work on this with Jim are being eagerly sought. Thank you to Joann Brannock for her prompt response to the call. Meeting for interested parties will be at 11:30 next Wednesday prior to the weekly gathering. · Program Committee meeting will be next Thursday at 7:30 am. Call Jay Kraemer if you have ideas or would like to attend. |
Announcements: (continued) · Training sessions for doing your own laundry will be held by Bill Schenk. Ken Kaisch will be featured at the first meeting as an example as to HOW NOT TO SORT YOUR COLORS to avoid ending up with pink shirts and unmentionables. · Chet Schultz added that you don’t want to be seen wearing pink as it is the color worn by Arizona convicts. Chet went on to say that his $100 was donated to Troy High School’s Bridge Builders because he is one too. The money will be used to fund their competition in engineering an efficient and creative bridge design. · President Terri announced that we raised $1,500 for boxes to the military last week at Bow Tie day. $20 squares are still available for anyone interested. Finemaster: Paul Dudley waited many years for the opportunity to levy some fines against this club. He has never told a joke to the club and started his brief tenure as finemaster with tips on how to get your boss to give you some stress time off. He also insulted Joe Lins, and Mike Oates for working in the dark. Fined for his birthday…no his anniversary was Bill Mathey who has been wonderfully lucky to have Robyn in his life for more than 32 years. Joann Brannock was recognized for being 67 and liberated on her birthday the 7th of October. Paul also fined Mary Francis Berry for her birthday on the 15th. While he did not ask her age, she volunteered that she was really close to Joann. After asking USC graduates to all stand, he went on to request information from Pat Mckinley as to who they have played so far, (AK, NE, AZ, WA, & WA State), Jim Blake was fined $50 for helping Chief Pat, $69 was fined against Bob Radde for not knowing that 69 points had been won by USC to date this year, Bob Clark, Jr. was fined for not knowing anything about their sports program (he was a business school major) and Lee Myhre was fined $38 just for being a Nebraska fan (Go Cornhuskers)! Don Bankhead, Dick Jones and Minard Duncan were all fined for their number of years of holding office in our community. The fines were $17, $4 & $20. You may guess which belonged to the individuals fined. Finally it was determined that Bow Tie day did not raise enough money and Joe Lins was fined for wearing said tie once again this week. Paul ended his fining rampage with a discourse on skunks, bankers, lawyers, drinking, beer and hell. Paul, we did not know you had shades of Elmer Gantry in your blood! Program: A hugh welcome to Barbara Giasone, 33 year resident of Fullerton and 32 year veteran of reporting with the Orange County Register. She presented a program on Ethics in Journalism. She opened with a Webster’s Dictionary definition of ethics, “the principles of conduct governing an individual or a guiding philosophy or a consciousness of moral importance.” Barbara then gave us several synonyms including “morality, morals, principles, standards.” She provided us with a list of the requirements found in the “Society of Journalist’s Code of Ethics” and proceeded to give examples of the types of moral quandaries she has encountered in her field. It was an excellent program and highlighted why we enjoy having Barbara report to us on community events, problems and issues found within our city limits. Ray Ashcroft presented Barbara with an August 7th, 1991 edition of the Daily Star Progress which featured an article about Fullerton Rotary’s involvement in community outreach (Ambulance Refurbishment Program) as written by Barbara. He thanked her for the excellent reporting she has done on behalf of Fullerton Rotary. Raffle: Was won by Leslie McCarthy who promptly drew a 7 of spades. Both jokers are still hiding. Closing thought by President Terri: Each day is a new beginning. |
