Opening Ceremonies: Lonnie Blake led the club in the pledge of allegiance before Songmaster Howard Wood and Pianist Don Ludwig led the club in a patriotic Yankee Doodle Dandy followed as usual by Smile. David Schoen gave an invocation and compared a few Bible verses with the goals and objectives of Rotary. Prez Terri called for announcements and Randy McFarland led the pack with his announcement that District Awards booklets are now available online. These reports are essential in order for our club to get recognition in the district for club events throughout the year. Greg Hickman invited all Rotarians and their families to attend a free outside movie shown at the CLC parking lot at 404 Wilshire Ave. on Friday Aug. 25. A family film and free concessions are offered. Jo Brannock detailed the “Unsung Heroes” program. She is looking to honor local families of servicemen and women who are currently serving in each branch of the armed forces in Iran or Afghanistan to be honored and recognized as Unsung Heroes. Recognition Master Tom Meyer called upon Fred Johnson, Dennis Ullrich and Lee Brokett for their birthdays. Their fines were commuted to half price for answering correctly Tom’s carefully crafted questions. Lee Myhre, however, was not offered a question and in fact had to pay full price for what Tom called a Prop 13 penalty. Happy Birthday Lee! District Governor Lane Calvert was also recognized (at full price) for his birthday. Tom offered to commute his fine to zero if he could finish his speech early.

Greg Hickman, Rick Crane was recognized for his Tennis etiquette. Craig Walker paid a $32 fine for sunglasses recovery. John Phelps was recognized for having his luggage lost on a recent cruise - especially so because of his newly acquired wardrobe. J. B. Braun won the opportunity drawing and was offered a chance to pick one of two jokers for Prez Terri’s deck of cards. He didn’t find the joker but the card he drew will be removed from the deck. Next week’s lucky winner will have a slightly better chance of winning the prize. J.B.’s $10 consolation prize was donated by Past District Governor Lane is a native California who was born in Santa Monica. He received a degree in Recreation from Cal State Northridge in 1973. He has been employed by the Boy Scouts of America for 30 years and is currently the Director of Exploring in Orange County. He has been a Rotarian for 24 years and has been a member of 6 different clubs. Lane addressed the club and laid out his goals for the District for the next year. Lane's motto is “Character Counts”. He said the Rotarian can change the world, one positive action at a time. Lane explained how the 4-way test can achieve Rotary goals of : 1) Membership increase Lane finished a few minutes before 1:30 and Finemaster Tom Meyer commuted his $57 birthday recognition fine to zero. |
