Before the Program

Today’s meeting was held offsite at CSUF.  The majority of members wound their way around the campus and found the meeting at the new performing arts complex.  Those that did not get there missed a great tour and meeting featuring our own Jim “Paul Harris” Young, founder of the theatre department at CSUF, who has been appropriately recognized and honored by having the state of the art 250-seat theatre named the James D. Young Theatre.

Starting the meeting, Dr. Nate, arriving via Hope University, led us in the flag salute, followed by Dr. Jim Y with the invocation emphasizing the meaning of the pledge we had just taken.

Our president called on Jim Blake to introduce visiting Rotarians and guests.  However, he got a little confused and started off trying to be a finemaster and then he thought he was in charge of the lost and found department.  Finally, he figured out he was really supposed to be introducing guests and started off with Drew Napolin, who introduced his son, Alex.  Next, Jim Williams, after two apologies for obscure transgressions, introduced his wife of 35 years, Sally, and his friends, Blake and Irene Smith.  In a guest-filled afternoon, we also had Willa Vanderburg, former member, Dick Rocke, Bob Engemann’s daughter, Joan Montana, and absentee Lee’s guest, Rebekah Havard.  Also gracing our presence was “Bill Cordes” from OrangeBill Heaton’s wife, Millie Cork, doubled as both a guest and hostess.

Two kinds of chicken were featured for lunch in the Garden Café patio, on a nice warm afternoon under umbrellas.

The Program

President Terri introduced Dr. Jerry Samuelson, Dean of the College of the Arts, who has overseen the construction of the new performing arts center dedicated earlier this year.  Following a brief description of the Music-Theatre-Dance complex that now graces the CSU campus, reputed to be the best west of the Mississippi, the club was treated to a tour led by Dr. Samuelson.  The new facility has three venues, the aforementioned James D. Young Theatre; the Vaughncille Joseph Meng Theatre (named in honor of our Club’s long time pianist) and the Millie and Dale Hallberg Concert Hall.  All three facilities are magnificent state-of-the-art performance venues of the highest quality.  With the parking problem solved by the two new parking structures, and multiple events scheduled every weekend throughout the year, the North Orange County community has an outstanding new entertainment resource available.  To get on the mailing list to receive information on all the various performances that are scheduled for the upcoming school year, call or e-mail Bill Heaton’s wife, Millie Cork or Dr. Jim Y.
