Volume 65, Issue 46 Rota-Scribe: Minard Duncan

Opening - President Joyce Cappelle
Pledge - Rick Crane
Song Leader - Howard Wood Songs: “I Want A Girl” and “Smile”
Thought for the Day - Maryalyce Jeremiah

Guests and Hosts were introduced by Joe Lins. Joe entertained us by accidently reading last week’s guests as well as reading a make-up for Jo Brannock. After the crowd enlightened him, Joe was performed perfectly!

- Buck Catlin presented a $1,500 check to Barry Ross of St. Jude Hospital to support children in the new Wellness Center being contructed at Richman Park. This is a joint venture with the City of Fullerton, St. Jude Hospital and the Fullerton Elementary School District. Barry told us that there are 10,000 uninsured children in Orange County. St. Jude had 2,500 children visits last year. The hope is that the Center will alleviate the load at the St. Jude Emergency Room.

- Ray Ashcroft introduced his wife of 48 years, Mary Ruth.

- Ray Hansen introduced wife Nancy. Ray brought an extremely humorous audio tape of Nancy and him. Just after they were engaged to be married, they appeared on the Groucho Marx radio show. By correctly answering questions on the show about the Bible and Nancy saying the “Secret Word of the Night”, they won $450 and spent it on their honeymoon. The couple celebrated their 50th Anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day! You had to be there to fully appreciate the tape.

Recognition Master
Maryalyce Jeremiah came out as our team coarch with hat and whistle and after warming us up with the team cheer of “We are the Rotary” 4 different ways by emphasing a different word in the sentence each time, she explained very convincingly that there are 5 kinds of members on a team: Leaders (Stars doing extra), Contributors (Doing what is expected with a little extra), Participants (Doing what is expected), Observers (Doing less than expected) and Detractors (Causing trouble). Maryalyce assigned Rotary members with anniversaries as Leaders, members

Cathy Gach introduced 4 of her students at Fullerton High that attended RYLA Camp: Marco Echerrerria, Jungbee Huh, Korlegfah Mouth and Kristiana Peru.

Each were extremely excited and appreciative about their experiences at camp even mentioning that the experience was the greatest experience they have had in their entire life. They want to return next year as counselors.

Program 2
Theresa Harvey gave an excellent, interesting Craft Talk. She grew up in Glendale as the youngest of several children in a very musical family. Each sibbling played a string instrument but she wanted to be different and learned to be a very accomplished bassoonist. In the mid 1970s, she received a scholarship in music education at Chapman College. Later she switched to CSUF and majored in communication, public relations and music education. Twenty-three years ago she met her husband, Bill, while she was a cocktail waitress.
She began her career in advertising and public relations and then found her dream job in research, grant writing and fundraising for the Orange County Performing Arts Center while it was under construction. Her dream job ended when she gave birth to daughter Ann who,by the way, was Miss Fullerton in 2005 and later gave birth to son Peter who is going to Chapman on a scholarship in film. She was a technical writer for CSUF, a ballet company, recently worked for the Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton, and now is the Executive Director for the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce.

Theresa described the bassoon to us as a double reed instrument that is more than seven feet long. She played a few bars for us, and she is a member of the Fullerton Community Band and also plays in the Performing Arts Symphony.
