The event began with ample time for mingling with Paul Harris himself making the rounds, greeting many of the party goers. Formalities commenced at noon with President Joyce Capelle leading the flag salute, Dr. Bill Peloquin giving the invocation and Dr. Leroy Fulton leading us in song.
Fully aware of the “four way test”, Jim Young, master of ceremonies, immediately confessed that he wasn’t sure if he was Paul Harris or Jim Young, but his fine attire indicated that Mr. Harris was indeed in our presence. He must have been proud! The committee was recognized for the great job they did organizing the event: Wally Bartelt, Mike Oates, Ray Ashcroft, Jim Young, Jack Hayes, and Walt Barnes- Walt came up with the whole concept in the first place and orchestrated the details, making the celebration possible! Sandy Hayes and Adrianne Barnes with assistance from Bob and Gloria Radde did the nice decorations! Wally & Walt are responsible for the good looking program that was on the tables. Jim Young was impressive introducing the many dignitaries, past district governors, their wives and the district officials and a future district governor in attendance. Rotarians introduced their wives and family members. Due to the risk of leaving someone out, won’t name them all here, but get a hold of one of the great programs if you like. It was like a Rotarian Who’s Who! I do have to mentioned that in attendance was Carlene Grossman, the first female club president in all of Rotary when ladies were first allowed in back in 1985. Cal State Fullerton’s “The Preeminents” presented a very enjoyable and professional program… three sets of rousing American tunes… a patriotic opening, nostalgic and then swing music, 20 in all . . . choreographed wonderfully and done with incredible smiling enthusiasm! Dr. Mike Abdalla, former district governor and Rotary Foundation trustee, to name only a couple of many positions and accomplishments, was the keynote speaker. He pointed out that only 700 of the 32,000 clubs in Rotary have achieved the feat of 100% Paul Harris Fellow membership! Walt Barnes was recognized for his great work both here and in Hawaii previously. Dr. Abdalla discussed many of the great things Rotary is able to do thanks to the donations made to the Rotary Foundation.

As Wally Bartelt and Walt Barnes kept feeding the certificates in proper order, Jim Young read the names of the newest Paul Harris Fellows as Mike Abdalla presented the certificates and posed with each for a photo. Next “multiple Paul
Harris Fellows” were recognized, starting with one additional and going all the way up to six by Jim Blake and 7 for Walt Barnes, indicating donations in excess of $1000 for each membership. Consult the program for more details! Special thanks to Tony Amato, Andy Anderson, Gordon Bagne, Walter Barnes, Dave Bates, Allan Bridgford, Harry Brown, Bob Clark,Jr. Les Christensen, Griff Duncan, Pat Geary, Terri Grassi, Ray Hansen, Robert Jahncke, Bill Peloquin, John Phelps, Dennis Ullrich and Jim Young for their generous participation in the matching funds and points program which helped fellow Rotarians become Paul Harris Fellows! The event concluded with a group photo shot down from a balcony! All in all, it was a wonderful party celebrating a great milestone for the Rotary Club of Fullerton. Sorry if you weren’t able to attend. . . it was a great party! |
