The Interact Clubs of Fullerton and Sunny Hills High Schools took over the meeting today and gave President Joyce Capelle a partial respite from prez duties. Interact members from Fullerton High were Kordeyfah Mouth and Robert Larious accompanied by teacher adviser Diane Oestrerich. Sunny Hills Interact members were Sharon Kang, Charwood Myung, Keong Kim, Michelle Michael and Joelle Ryn accompanied by Sunny Hills Attendance Dean David Posthuma. The meeting was opened by Kordeyfah Mouth and Robert Larious with Robert giving the flag salute. Leroy Fulton gave the invocation with a request for guidance in the development of new leaders for Rotary and our country through the Interact program. Howard Wood led the singing with new words to the old song “Hail, Hail the Gang’s All Here.” All enjoyed singing this song almost in key and the regular Rotary opening song. Vern Andrews introduced visitors. Jim Blake welcomed guest Wolf Knabe, Chief of the Fullerton Fire Department. J. Richey welcomed his guest Dan Moran whom he met at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Wally Swatkowski’s guest was Kristen Holt of Century 21. A visiting Rotary member was Brian Lindsey of Recognition Master Griff Duncan had few to recognize so told a joke to fill his time, which was mostly well received by members. To avoid a fine Griff asked those recognized to identify a famous Broadway play from clues he gave. Example was a musician with his feet off the ground. This was “Fiddler on the Roof.” No recognized Rotarian actually recognized the clues and saved the fine. Bob Clark Jr. was recognized for the upcoming birthday of his wife, which turned out to be incorrect. It was the birthday of Bob Clark Sr.’s wife. Bob Jr. was fined anyway. Bill McGarvey was recognized for an unstated reason, perhaps his birthday or his red sox. His fine was a properly calculated $67.21 including sales and income tax. Dave Bates was recognized in absentia for being a member for 34 years. He was commended for periodically visiting Fullerton Main Rotary but has been accused of attending Fullerton South on a more regular basis. John Phelps gave a short talk accompanied by a plastic trash bag. His talk recommended contributions to the Rotary Foundation of a dollar a day. He offered to rent a large Teddy Bear he had in the trash bag for a dollar a day to Rotary members who contributed. He excluded weekends when he required the Teddy Bear remain at home for unstated reasons. Even Teddy Bears deserve some time off.

Buck and Bobbi Catlin were reported to now be residing at Morningside. Buck is now in the Park Vista area due to severe problems with back pain. Tests are being run to evaluate the problem. President Joyce asked for U.S. military veterans to e-mail her with stories of their military service for a special Veteran’s Day program. A recognition of those having served in the U.S. military is planned. Joyce’s e-mail is jrcapelle@aol.com. Howard Wood won the raffle with a correct answer and received a Paul Harris CD and $20.00. Interact members from Fullerton High, Kordeyfah Mouth and Robert Larious described the many activities of their group. They have participated in many school functions.. A fund raiser for Interact has been the sale of Fullerton Indian sweatshirts at school athletic events. Sunny Hills Interact members Sharon Kang, Charwood Myung, Keong Kim, Michelle Michael and Joelle Ryn described the several activities of their group. Their fund raiser was helped by the Island Restaurant near Sunny Hills donating a portion of their proceeds to Interact on one afternoon. They have 80 members in their group but only 20 are active. Members have developed a program to help tutor some Buena Park students who are having problems with math and English. Interact coordinates with ethnic clubs at Sunny Hills such as the Indian and Filipino clubs. They thanked Rotary for the four RYLA awards used by their Interact group. Bob Radde and Dick Glaus are commended for their work with and guidance to these two Interact groups. In the regular joke off, Prez Joyce Capelle retired briefly after the win last week to allow two contenders to fight for the chance to meet the Prez in a future competition. Don Ludwig had two short jokes rather than the standard one but was well received on both. Dick Glaus had one which was also appreciated by the Rotarians. In the applause evaluation, no discernable difference was detected between Ludwig or Glaus. This will be a tough choice for the Prez. However, a rousing ovation of applause was received when Rotarians were asked if they appreciated that Mike Oates was not asked to give a joke.
