Volume 64, Issue 37 Rota-Scribe: Minard Duncan

The meeting was opened by President Bob Savage who asked Rick Crane to lead us in the Flag Salute. He was followed by the incomparable Five Songsters of Ray Ashcroft, Leroy Fulton, Bll Peloquin, Ron Soderquist and Howard Wood who led us in singing a beautiful patriotic song and our ever famous "Smile."

In the Thought for the Day, Randy McFarland related some history he got from Club Past President Dr. Bill Lenahan of forty years ago. Originally, our club met at the Masonic Temple (now Springfield Conference Center) where lunches cost the Rotary members 85 cents. The cost went up to $1.20 and the food did not rise in quality commensurate to the price so the club moved to the Elks Club. Randy followed with an appropriate prayer.

Howard introduced Guests, Hosts and Visiting Rotarians: District Governor Grant Engel and our own District Governor Elect Dr. Bill Peloquin; and Bill Christensen, Orange Rotarian brought friend Rob Fleishman.

Announcements: Jim Thompson and several Rotarians were recognized for volunteer work at the Track Meet last Saturday.

Randy McFarland needs help with putting together the annual events books that go to the Disrict. He will be working at his office Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Anyone wishing to help just show up anytime. Rotarians responsible for the events are to turn in their reports ASAP.

Please Call Randy at 501 4006, his office is locted at

Howard Wood for being 82 and Tom Meyer for Illinois being in the NCAA Finals.

Raffle: Tom Meyer won $30 for knowing that the farm producer gets only five cents out of each dollar spent for the product in the stores.

Program

Ed Ginter showed us a video about the Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service (FIES). A brief history and description of FIES's three programs of
1. Food and Clothing Distribution Center.
2. New Vista Transition Living Center.
3. Interfaith Shelter Network (ISN) . FIES started in 1975 to help people in need of emergency food and shelter. At that time ten churches stepped up to help. Now more than twenty churches and synagogues are involved. FIES would like more groups to join the struggle against hunger and the homeless. There are 26,000+ homeless people in Orange County and half are children. The Transition Living Center can help twelve families at a time and they can stay up to 120 days. They must save 80 percent of what they earn so they can get out on their own when they complete their stay. They are helped with life skills, child care and transportation. Today, it takes an hourly wage of $18 to be able to rent an apartment in our community. The FIES Annual Dinner/Auction is Sunday, September 25 at Angelo's and Vinci's. Steven Peck donates the food and room and FIES receives the income.

Prez Bob closed the meeting with, "The only preparation needed for tomorrow is the right use of today."
