Opening moments Our ever cheerful leader, Bob Savage began the meeting at Hope International University and immediately after the flag salute, our song leaders led us in the singing of an Irish song that I didn't know or recognize very much, so pretended to lip sync until the "Smile" song. This concluded the singing part of the opening ceremonies. Watching the faces of first time guests when our group sings makes the title ever more appropriate. David Schoen preceded "Washington's Prayer for America" prayer by telling us that perched atop the highest structure in Washington DC, the Washington Monument (555 feet and 5.128 inches tall when last measured) is an aluminum cap with the Latin words, "Laus Deo" inscribed, which means "Praise be to God!" I'm afraid to think of the ruckus that will transpire when the ACLU finds out about this! Guests and visitors Randy McFarland welcomed our most recent past prez. Greg Franklin, visiting from Glendale, with former member Mike Escalante. Ron Soderquist took out a small loan to host three guests, Pat, his wife, Jane Derry and Elodie Anderson, all three in the same sewing group. Finally, Cameron McCune introduced his guest, David Miyashire. Randy concluded by attempted a St. Patrick's Day joke and received what is actually greatest compliment one can get when telling a pun. Groans. . . Regardless, in a desperate and backhanded attempt to deflect this response, he thanked Mike Oates, who had never even heard the joke until right then. Announcements
Induction Joyce Capelle prefaced this ceremony with a few words about how the meaning of Rotary for her has continued to grow over the years and Bob Jahncke related that our new inductee, Frank Allen actually first connected with him through the website and has lived in Fullerton for 7 years. The ceremony reached it's climax when president Bob showered Rotary's newest member with multiple items, like a Rotary pin, Newest 9 ribbon on his nametag, a club roster, ABCs of Rotary, a framed copy of the 4 Way test and a certificate of membership! The ceremony came to conclusion with the traditional standing ovation by the entire club!

FINEMASTER Dick Daybell moved along quickly with the fines, nailing several members in rapid succession, like John Christensen for having a spousal birthday (Terry), Mark Zane's birthday and Ray Hansen's 49th anniversary and spousal (Nancy) birthday and Randy McFarland's 29th anniversary. Past president, Greg Franklin visited us and was finally accessed a "departure fee" that was long overdue. Question of the Day Randy McFarland let an opportunity of a lifetime slip through his hands when he was unable to name that 1953 TV program named, "Name that Tune". Thanks to the involuntary generosity of an unsuspecting fellow Rotarian, Randy's account was supposedly fattened by $10, despite the fact that he had help when he gave the wrong answer! Joyce again graced the podium as she
introduced our speaker, Pamela McGovern, with the Council on Aging, Orange County. This mostly volunteer organization offers several services to Orange County Seniors and caregivers of which there were 7 in the audience. Most of the money that support the Council on Aging comes from Federal, State and community funds, foundations and individuals. Pamela told us that there are 850 residents in Fullerton's 8 nursing homes and there are 1800 people in residence in 39 assisted living facilities in our city. Loneliness and Isolation are significant factors in a person's quality of life even if their physical needs are being met, so visitation is one of the important services offered by this organization. Other programs offer financial and health insurance counseling, seminars, financial abuse intervention, care management for disabled adults in their homes and more. We are fortunate to have such a comprehensive agency not only in Orange County, but throughout our country. They can be reached at (714) 479 0107 or www.coaoc.org. Thanks for an informative program, Pamela! Prez Bob concluded the proceedings by reminding us that, "The Company you keep will determine the trouble you meet." Upcoming Events: Mar 19th Track Meet - 8:30 am at Fullerton College Track - See Mike Oates
