Last week, it was a precedent, but this week it became a tradition… we met again at Hope International University, where Al Tetreault, known to all as “Al T” (like on your computer keyboard) proudly let us in the pledge. We saw some new singers lend assistance in leading us in song… Howard Wood, Ron Soderquist, Leroy Fulton, Ray Ashcroft, Bob Savage Bill Peloquin and Al T. Leroy commented that some of the singers were actually singing in tune!!... I’ve occasionally noticed this phenomenon from the rest of us every so often. Regardless, many were actually smiling during the second song! Rick Price reminded us in the Thought of the Day that this is the Chinese New Year. He noted that Chinese tradition suggests that this would be a bad year to get married (is there a good year?) and he noted that Rotary went on hold in the 1950’s after 30 years in China (due to Communism) but it is making a comeback, which reminds us how fortunate we are to have the freedom to assemble and of free speech. Don Ludwig patiently waited for the lunch line to go down while serenading the rest of us with his enjoyable musical style at the piano. Bob Savage quickly brought us to reality by calling the meeting to order, having Lee Myhre welcome the guests and visiting Rotarians. Leroy introduced the West Virginia “1999 Rotarian of the Year”, Bill Ellis and his significant other, Kitty, who blew in from Hurricane, West Virginia. Another visiting Rotarian was Andy Ersek from Orange North. Daniel Kang introduced guests David Song and Shine Kim while Scott Dowd’s guests were Graham and Chris Latham. Jim Lapak’s guest was Lanny Couvillun and Bob Jahncke introduced guest Frank Allen. Announcements: Randy McFarland reminded all directors and event chairs to procure “Project Description Form”, fill them out and submit them ASAP to avoid a last minute rush in submitting our booklets for the District Awards Program. Randy also encouraged use of the orange colored Event Announcement Form to assure that all pertinent info is announced and accurately reported in the Rotagram. Maryalyce Jeremiah spoke highly of the coaching abilities of our esteemed president, Bob Savage, who joined every single team huddle courtside with his sporting wife, Sue while co-coaching Maryalyce’s Cal State Fullerton’s women’s basketball team against UC Davis. Due to Bob’s focus and intensity, his leadership helped the team attain a 23 point lead at one point. While his natural ability was obvious, Maryalyce pointed out that his inexperience contributed to a loss of concentration during the last 13 minutes, almost costing us the game. (Rumor has it that Bob was trying to teach the girls on the bench how to jump up and click their heels in mid air!) A backdrop poster promoting Bob as the next Lakers coach, boasts his winning record (1-0) Jack Hayes announced that due to the close call, Cal State Fullerton has decided against renaming the team the “Savage Titans”, but the referees would be given a copy of the “4 way test”. Minard Duncan announced, reminded, requested… OK… BEGGED that we show our presence at the Rotary Dental Clinic at Valencia Park School,(between Gilbert and Magnolia on Valencia Drive) 10:00AM Saturday, February 12. Enjoy a tour of the operations for a smile! Diane Masseth-Jones invited us to support the “Chocolate Fantasy” at the Brea Embassy Suite hotel on Friday, Feb. 25th at 6:00PM. Our own Mike Oates will be the MC, so he’ll have an opportunity to try out some of his jokes on a test audience before unleashing them at Rotary. |
David Schoen said that Eastside Christian School will be hosting the Education Committee meeting and a tour at 7:30PM. Feb.? Bill Peloquin offered an opportunity for us guys to pass this annual “test” called Valentine’s Day. A singing Valentine including a card, a rose and a picture! Buck Catlin gave us all another fair warning that the Community Investment Award applications are due by February 21. Recognitions: Fine master Dick Daybell as usual was almost salivating in anticipation of levying fines to benefit the club coffers. First, he presented a mini basket ball pendant to winning coach Bob Savage, a surprisingly kind act for a fine master. Not wasting anytime, however, Dick swiftly got down to business, issuing merciless fines to Howard Wood, Don Bankhead and Jack Hayes for commandeering and holding on to the best most comfortable front row seats in the house for the entire party at Bill Mathy’s Superbowl extravaganza. Bill only admitted to serving 10 gallons of Margarita at the party which also featured lots of great food and even non –alcoholic drinks. Bill also admitted that he just turned 55 years old. Mike Oates admitted that he committed matrimony 38 years ago with Elizabeth Feb. 4th. John Derry was fortunate to get a “heads up” that his 34th anniversary will be Feb 10th. (The benefits of Rotary!) Jim Lapak will turn 59 (again?) on Feb. 13th Happy Birthday! Bob Foust also got a freebie reminder that his next anniversary will be Feb. 14. (Valentine’s Day! Now that’s efficient!) Raffle Rick Crane apparently doesn’t just gaze at the stars.. he counts them! He correctly stated that there are exactly 200 million stars in our Milky Way galaxy (give or take a several hundred thousand!)
The Orange County Business Council is making efforts to ensure that parents of students have access to resources that help increase the level of technical training for their kids, so more will be able to afford local housing. Bob Savage reminded us of a special Valentine’s Day program next week and his closing thought was, “Nothing is interesting if you’re not interested.”
