Pres Bob Savage asked Bill Hite to lead us in the Flag Salute. Ray Ashcroft, Leroy Fulton, Bill Peloquin, Ron Soderquist and Jim Young led us in song with “God Bless America” and “Smile.”

Ray Ashcroft presented the Thought for the Day and emphasized leadership. He recognized Bill Kincaid as a great example of good leadership when Bill was the Rotary president. His vision was to have a fundraiser to help needy people. Unfortunately, the concert chairperson at that time had to back out, so Bill took over and made sure the concert took place. Now we are about to have our 16th Annual Concert. Bill, thanks for your leadership!

Program: Jim Blake introduced Ron Gastelum, Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Water District, which is the largest utility in the world. The MWD is also the most developed water district infrastructure in the country. It covers six counties and has 26 member agencies. MWD is a wholesaler of water imported from the Coloradeo River and Northern California through the State Water Project. Their job is to supplement the local water resources of its member agencies when the local resources are insufficient to meet the local demand. MWD provides about half of the watrer consumed by urban Southern California residents each year. The other half is supplied from local resources.

Most of the debate about water in California is about money and long held, but not productive, regional prejudices. Gastelum maintains that regional cooperatioin, both financially and politically, will yield the best results for everyone in California.

He says that California is not facing an energy type crisis in supply water or confronting the kind of shortages that others face in the Colorado River Basin because we have planned and have made investments necessary to avert a crisis. We will need to continue to update and refine our plans, and commit the financial resources to implement them, and continue to achieve even greater conservation savings.

President Bob closed the meeting with “Whenever you are feeling powerful, try ordering your neighbor’s dog around.”

Remember next week’s meeting is at Hope University.
