Volume 63, Issue 40 Rota-Scribe: Minard Duncan

President Bill Mathy promptly called the meeting to order and asked Daniel Kang to lead us in the Flag Salute. Griff Duncan, Leroy Fulton, Bill Peloquin, Bob Savage, Howard Wood and the rest of us followed singing “My Country Tis’ of Thee” and “Smile” with accompaniment by Don Ludwig. Joyce Capelle presented the Thought for the Day telling us about Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and the great work Rotary does behind the leadership of Mike Darnold PDG from our District 5230.

Russ Kaufman made a feeble attempt at telling a joke and then proceeded to introduce hosts, guests and visiting Rotarians: Ron Soderquist - Joe Bahash, Chief Pat McKinley - Deborah Courtney. Dick Boyle got his usual “boo” from the crowd.

Jim Burton, Troy High track coach, and Greg Abbott, Sunny Hills track coach, thanked our club for promoting and supporting the Fullerton City Track and Field Championships for the last 13 years. The coaches introduced Troy students Christina Alvis and Daniel Gomez and Sunny Hills students Jon Hofus and Claire Kim. Each of them won several events at the track meet and were heralded as outstanding athletes. The coaches relayed a message to us from the big boys in the field events, namely, “Thanks for the hamburgers!” . Jim Burton told us that Mike Oates is picking up the torch from Jim Thompson in this endeavor and Troy student, Christina Alvis, presented Mike with a Troy Warrior shirt.

Finemaster Mike Nomura fined J Richey in celebration of his anniversary with wife

Rose Marie, and Ron Soderquist was fined for his birthday.

Minard Duncan won the raffle but failed to know that Oldsmobile began making cars in 1897.

Proposed New Member: Joe Lins, Century 21 Discovery, Proposed by Jim Blake & Don Bankhead.
Next Weeks' meeting, May 4, is at Hydroflow.
Chief McKinley introduced Deborah Courtney who is an expert in Megan’s Law. A petition for an initiative will be coming to us sometime in the future to expand Megan’s Law so sexual predators can be located easier. Deborah was raped and beaten by a predator that was wearing an ankle monitor! She wants a GPS chip placed in the monitors so we can keep better track of them.

Gregg Franklin was selected as Rotarian of the week for his excellent work on the board and the excellent coordination with the FJUHSD.

Greg Franklin introduced Scott Hedgecock from Fullerton High School. Scott told us about The Orange County Singing Competition that our Rotary Club supports. 400 students entered the contest. 9 students from Fullerton High made it to the semi-finals. There were 4 categories: Male and Female Classical and Male and Female Musical Theater. Our Fullerton group had a 1st, 2nd or 3rd Place winner in each category.

Erin Miller sings a Classical tune

Two of the wnners were able to get away from school to sing for us. Corrie Carter, 3rd Place winner in the musical theater category, sang “I’m Your Daddy’s Son” from Ragtime and Erin Miller sang a classical piece that took 1st Place. Both performers were outstanding.

Rick Terry accompanied each of the singers.

President Bill Mathy closed the meeting by quoting Lee Iaccoca, “Your legacy should be you make it better than when you got it.”
