Volume 63, Issue 33 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

Pledge to the Flag: Mr. Louis Arigani led us in the Flag salute. He is an example to us all as a 61 year member of his own club with PERFECT attendance.

Thought for the Day was presented by our own Joyce Capelle.

Your Rotoscribe was noticeably absent during the musical part of our meeting and therefore must depend on the other members at the table who all said our singing was on par with the kids we heard at the Rich Little Concert. Way to go members! You have been practicing.

Guests as presented by Bob Savage:

Visiting Rotarians did not include Mr. Boyle this week (maybe that was why our singing was on key). Louis Arigani was maintaining his perfect attendance and we were pleased to have him at the meeting.

Other guests included Bobbie (Buck's better half), Cameron introduced Harold Sullivan, principal of Laguna Road School, David Pool from Hope University was introduced by Leroy and Bob Savage brought Tim Campbell from the Maintenance Department for the City of Fullerton. WELCOME ALL!

Announcements were led off by President Bill.

Tuesday at 7:30 am next week will be the board meeting at the City Maintenance Yard Conference Room

Dan Kiernan "broke the bank" (oops that was supposed to be the jar) to introduce the coin (no current) campaign for the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton. Call Dan or Fred Johnson if you would like to put a jar (unbreakable) in your office or place of business. Dan will "pick up and deliver" so we had to use plastic to save on cut feet.

4/5/04 will be a wonderful day of golf at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights. This will be the Hoby Brenner Golf Tournament to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Sponsorships are available and please see Bob Jahncke for additional information.

Cathy Gott announced the coming of FUHS' Academy of the Arts performance of the Mystery of Edwin Drood. This is to be a solve it yourself musical with different endings for different performances and you don't want to miss it.

President Bill also announced the Program Committee meeting at 7:30 tomorrow at Carrows (3/4/04).

Jim Young had the honor and privilege of presenting two Paul Harris awards to men and their families who "exemplified" our motto of "Service Above Self" last week in Bakersfield. One young man whom he sat with had been badly disabled when his munitions truck was hit by a rocket. He drove it away from his unit so no others would be injured and truly was a hero. The second did not return from Iraq at all. $500 was donated to our Paul Harris Foundation thanks to Jim and his appearance.

Jim McKamy announced the "Day at the Races". See Jim for your tickets and he still has a few left if you didn't sign up and would like to go. It will be Sunday, March 14th and should be a great time for all!

Last and forgotten, your Rotoscribe was so busy she didn't announce the TOP 100 banquet for Sunnyhills will be March 24th. Sign up opportunities will be given over the next three weeks. We need some help for set up in the morning (tables, placesettings, etc.), help running to pick up flowers, ice cream, etc. and then a whole bunch of help for serving and cleanup from about 5:00 to 9:00. See Jim Thompson or Leslie McCarthy.

Rotarian of the Week goes to Dick Mathewson for his leadership and help with Reading by Nine! Thank you Dick!

Jim McKamy as Finemaster was only able to fine three of our fine members this week. We need to get him some new members to pick on. Keith Mills just turned 68 and knew immediately that John Wayne received his academy award for True Grit. Bob Radde and his wife are celebrating their birthdays this week and he was fined $60 for the privilege. He answered the question about Humphrey Bogart's award for African Queen. Craig Walker celebrates his 18th anniversary. Three for three questions were answered correctly with Jessica Tandy being the oldest female recipient of the award for her role in Driving Miss Daisy. As a group, we are watching way too many Turner "oldie" reruns.

A tax season raffle question scared away two members with the winning tickets. Dale Hardner missed the answer and won the consolation prize for missing the only work in the English language containing three sets of double letters in the word. See the Rotary Bulletin next week and we might give you the answer.

Program Dr. Barbara Stone with her State of the Political Climate Speech:

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Stone's political commentary in the past, you missed a treat. WE need to get her into the club so that she can keep us up to date on a more frequent basis. Covering topics from student interest in her classes, presidential Democratic primaries (including the zealots in Iowa), the propositions now and in the Fall, and finishing with a discussion on the sovereignty of the Indian tribes and legality of their political donations if they are truly sovereign nations, kept us all on our toes. Watch for the heated campaign between the Indian tribes, the card clubs and race tracks for control of the "one armed bandit" revenues coming up in the next election. All in all, politics should be an exciting animal to watch this year.

Concluding thought from President Bill: "Mud thrown is ground lost."

Next Week: Various Speech Winners

Until next time, Rotoscribe Leslie
