SAVE THE FOX FULLERTON THEATER!
The Fullerton Historic Theater Foundation makes the case for restoring and returning a City Treasure to its former Glory and usefulness.
Jane Reifer, Foundation President, and her staff made and excellent presentation on the concept of the restoration, its financing, design and operating potential for Fullerton Downtown. The City Redevelopment Agency has approved a "matching grant" of $1.3 million to help get the project funded and restored. The FHTF'S Vision is to create a multi-use movie, stage and cultural center for the Downtown cultural and economic benefit. Cinema, Cultural, Performing Arts, special Events and Educational activities will be accommodated. The FHTF will own and operate it. They are seeking in-kind construction assistance to help in the work. The FHTF is a non-profit, community- based group working to save the theater structure and its adjacent structures. Restaurant, retail, live entertainment wings will complement the theater. The Foundation's goal is to purchase, restore and operate the theater and business complex located on the northeast corner of Harbor and Chapman Avenue known as the "Firestone" corner. Failing in the challenge by November 2004, the Morgan Group will bring in the bulldozers. Highlighted were the Top TEN ways the citizens and businesses can help save the Fox. 1. Join the mailing list. The PROGRAM was preceded by the Regular Meeting presided upon by PREZ Bill Mathy. He summoned visiting past Rotary Club of Fullerton Member Mike Mogensen to give the Pledge. (He knew it!). This was followed by an augmented a Rotary Choral Group led by the indefigatible Grif Duncan with strong vocal support by Ray Ashcroft, Howard Wood, Bill Peloquin (he of a late colonoscopy--didn't affect his voice) and Ron Soderquist. |
CHIEF Pat Mckinley waxed eloquent on the "Thought for the Day" with some quotes from 19th Century literati about character in human beings. (Nice to appreciate the Chief diverges occasionally from reading depressing Police Blotter reports). VISITORS corralled by Fred Johnson: Tom Loftus----- Madison, Wisconsin, Downtown Rotary GUESTS: Richard Daybell -- Guest of Grif Duncan ROTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS Rick Crane has the sign-up sheet for the Sunday April 18th Rotary Day 1:00PM at Titan Field for the opening \baseball game. Limited seating. First 20 get Box Seats. Mike Oates needs support for the Fullerton Sister City Association O.C. DENTAL CLINIC, Dr. Doan, DDS, described his program in North Orange County Cities. RECOGNITION CHAIRMAN aka FINEMASTER Mike Nomura befuddled some Rotarians except Jim Blake by asking arcane questions relating to the Mardi Gras. Jim, who hails from Lake Charles, LA, knew the French origin of that classic. Jim Blackburn's guess about Ash Wednesday: ("MG disposal pick-up day on my block?" --wrong!) RAFFLE: Winner, Jim Blake again! Question: When was the Fox Fullerton first opened? ("1930? -- Wrong, Jim. Maybe that was when you first went to the Mickey Mouse matinees at the in Lake Charles Bijou! The right answer: 1925) |
NEXT WEEK's PROGRAM: "ELECTION PRIMARIES-- Dr. Barbara Stone, CSUF --Don't miss it!"
