Volume 61, Issue 13
Written and reported by Buck Catlin

If you are getting older, should you be considering oral surgery and perhaps dental implants or false teeth?

Sam Poidmore, DDS, and oral and maxillary surgeon gave us an insight on the modern technology of dental restorations. More in the PROGRAM section. A distinguished quinumvirate of Rotarians on the speakers’ table (Mathy, Levine, Prez Peloquin, Hansen and Dr. Poidmore) viewed with a critical eye as Rick Crane led the Pledge. It looked as though Griff Duncan was going to the soloist with Don Ludwig accompanying on the piano, for "America" and "Smile." Prez Peloquin came down from on high to add his basso profundo for a duet. (Great voice, Bill!)

Warren Wimer in his "Thought for the Day" quoted some gems from that classic " The Experts Speak -- The Definitive Compendium of Authoritative Misinformation". Example: "He'll never be any good", spoken by Robert Irsay, owner of the Baltimore Colts, after trading his newly drafted quarterback John Elway to the Denver Broncos. Warren admonished his Rotary brethren against making ill-considered ex cathedra pronouncement.

LUNCHEON: Our caterer produced a "shipping-over chow" of delicious breaded veal cutlets (the dessert pudding was great, too)! BRAZO ZULU Manor.

Town Crier Bob Sattler heralded the only visitor; Jim Hogg, Senior Active from Edina, Minnesota, part of the metropolis City of Minneapolis (I looked it up!)

GUESTS: Shawn Dahl, guest of Charlotte Durfesne-dyess; Damon Dragos, Principal, Sunny Hills High School, guest of Greg Franklin; Michael Nomura, Citizens Business Bank, guest of Les Christensen; Dr. Dick Hopping. O.D. guest of Dan Kiernan.

SPECIAL HAIL-AND-FAREWELL RECOGNITION: This was the last meeting here for Rotarian Jim Armstrong leaving for new position as City Manager for Santa Barbara, California. He was here and will be a great leader in every endeavor he undertakes. He certainly embodies the "Service Above Self" credo of Rotary.

RAFFLE: Vern Andrews (Again!!) #7130 answered enough of the question to win the money ($50). Mt. Everest in the Himalayan Mountains on the border between Tibet and Nepal is 29,028 ft. above sea level.

COMMERCIALS:
Chris Hunt: YWCA Week Without Violence, Candlelight Vigil at Center Street Promenade in Anaheim 6:30 PM Sunday Oct 14th
Terri Grassi circulating sheet for a Rotary recreational event for the club. Indicate your preferences.
Leroy Fulton reminds us of the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast 7:00 AM Wednesday October 17th. He has gratis available for club members.

RECOGNITION: Finemaster Jim Blackburn zeroed in on the alumni of USC (California) and USC (So. Carolina) Both college professional squads are on opposite poles of the win-loss column. (Guess which is which!) Leroy Fulton's truly amateur college Anderson-Franklin team beat Hickory State. Amateur or quasi-professional, they were fined.

PROGRAM:
Dr. Poidmore, whose resume included association with many of the quality medical hospital in So. California, gave us an in-depth explanation of the oral surgery aspects of dental implants and dentures. The bottom line is that we all get older and if your teeth are deteriorating, dental implants can reverse the process. Properly installed implants can restore 97% of proper mastication as opposed to 25% by dentures. Bone recedence can be arrested by implants. A good dentist/surgeon relationship along with skill and technology can work wonders. Cost is $2700-4000 per implant, but considering the longevity of the client is well worth the investment. Considering the population in billions spends $80 on tobacco; $300 gambling; $$300 on alcohol and $30 on dentistry, the priorities are clear. A BZ program by Dr. Poidmore.

10/17 Jesse James 11/7 District Governor's Visit
10/24 Communications Satellites 11/14 Congressman Ed Royce
10/31 Terrorism 11/21 Sports Chiropractor
