Bob Jahncke offered the Thought of the Day, which was a reminder that supporting Rotary Internationalls outreach and humanitarian services is an important way to build good will and lessen anti-American sentiment abroad. For the program, Greg Franklin provided an overview of the history and goings-on at Fullerton Union High School. Founded in 1894, FUHS has been at its current site since 1912, with Plummer Auditorium and the Gymnasium (both from 1927) the oldest buildings still on campus. Enrollment has increased from 1350 to 1913 over the past six years and additional space is needed, particularly for a science lab. Greg highlighted the schoolls Interact program, which is involved with community service (including sale of retail discount cards), the JROTC program, and FUHS three "academies:" agricultural, culinary, and fine arts. Not to be overlooked are the schoolls eight computer labs and associated website and vocational training. Challenges for school administration include meeting the diverse needs of a student population of which academically excels with another acquiring English skills. All students must soon pass a graduation exit exam, of which Algebra testing will be especially daunting for some. About one-quarter of graduates attend four-year colleges, including top schools.
Greg also told us that FUHS has studied whether to retain its Indian mascot. (It is thought that the mascot originated with the second teacher hired at the school, who came from Stanford). The answer is yes, although some stereotypical and potentially demeaning or offensive practices will be changed. The school now seeks to instill student awareness about the best of Indian cultures, as well as to provide education about American Indian history. This year’s interdisciplinary theme is American Indians, and Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills, of Indian descent, will speak at the school on October 31st.
Finally, appearing "out of order," Finemaster Jim Blackburn recognized the following birthdays and anniversaries: Jim Thompson 10/2 B62, Chris Fraschetti A#? 10/5; Bill Mathy A27 10/5; Winston Creel A35 10/7; Franki Berry and Pat House B 10/15, ; Ken Christianson spousal B.
The meeting ended with Bill Peloquin observing that temper, like a fire, is most destructive when out of control.
