Our District Governor Rod Eide from his parent Monarch Beach Sunrise Club was welcomed aboard for his annual visit to the Rotary Club of Fullerton. All hands were in their "dress canvas" in honor of the occasion. More under PROGRAM.
DICK MATHEWSON called the delegation to "Attention South" facing the flag outside the Elks Club. A "Septet From Sorento" - largest ever - BOB SAVAGE, RAY ASHCROFT, LEROY FULTON, JIM BLACKBURN , PRES PELOQUIN, JIM YOUNG led by GRIF DUNCAN gave a demonstration for DG ROD of lusty Rotarian singing. He was impressed! (Writer's observation).
MIKE OATES did a virtuoso piano interlude during lunch including the ragtime "Kansas City".
Being originally from Minnesota, the visiting DG appeared unimpressed. (Writer's observation).
SCOTT DOWDS waxed eloquent on the "Thought for the Day" reflecting on the recent Yankee-Diamondback baseball series. "Never say Never" was the theme. Because you don't know how or when years of preparation will be combined with an opportunity to create success. Luck--is what happens --- when preparation -- meets opportunity.
BOB JAHNCKE was awarded his Third "Rotarian of the Week" battle star for the superlative job he does and has been doing as Secretary. (Later in the RECOGNITION segment some unnamed Rotarian protested being fined out of calendar sequence about a birthday date. Claimed technical error in the Roster. Overruled. Was offered the job.)
ALAN LEAN won the raffle but drew a blank on who added the words "--under God--" to the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. (President Dwight Eisenhower. Date? 1954.)
Assistant DG OWEN DEAN , Fullerton Sunrise

TERRI GRASSI is shaping up a Huntington Harbor Christmas Lights Cruise; $12 adults; $8 children. Call TERRI direct.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION! PRES PELOQUIN announced that that our Club was THIRD in RI District 5320 ($15,000) donations. Newport Beach and Irvine clubs were FIRST and SECOND, $20,000 and $17,000 respectively, reflecting higher rent Rotary districts.
DG Rod Eide first saw the light of day in Moorhead, Minnesota, ( Western Minnesota, a stone's throw from North Dakota. Br-r-r!) In fact, he graduated from North Dakota State in mechanical engineering and went to work for 20 years in aerospace. Formed his own business in sheet metal products which gave him time to work up the ladder in Rotary . The central theme of his message is "PARTICIPATION". He envisions Rotary as a FACTORY building housing INTERNATIONAL SERVICE, VOCATIONAL SERVICE leading to an output of COMMUNITY SERVICE. Inside the factory are the elements of the Rotary Club organization members ,each with a vital service task. ROD emphasized that Rotary should be "FUN" reflected in the knowledge that you are apart of the motto, "SERVICE ABOVE SELF".
In response to BOB JAHNCKE 's query about the number of District 5320 women presidents, ROD said there are 7 out of the 50 clubs.
MASTER JIM BLACKBURN was the final act with a spate of birthday and anniversary levies, viz. JIM VANDENBERG (67); JOYCE CAPELLE (29); LEROY FULTON (70); and special fines WINSTON MILLER , JUDY PAPPE. The Big TEN Football rivalry between Purdue and Illinois cost those Rotary alumni present $51 since the Fighting Illini took the Boilermakers 38 to 13.
Jim closed the revelry with a gem about a Jewish man hiding out with a girl in a Catholic church in Germany during WWII. He escaped getting caught by the Germans and received post-war absolution from an understanding rabbi. The punch line had DG ROD rolling off his chair thus ensuring high marks for the Club. (The "punch line" ? Ask one of the Rotarians present).
